In a day and age when—according to her biography—even Anna “Cruella” Wintour has pretty much stopped wearing fur, the faux stuff is getting increasingly stylish and cool. It’s also often very warm, which doesn’t count for nothing, and these days comes in the kind of happy bright colors that can maybe even turn around your mood on the 16,000th sunless, frigid, soul-killing day of winter. I like faux fur which doesn’t even try to look like the real thing, like on this double-breasted coat. The styling here is not so much to my taste, but the cocoon-ish shape is aces.
A lady jacket in an appealing raspberry hue.
Lilac is having a bit of a moment right now, and I really dig the oversized dimensions of this choice.
And here’s a nicely poppy pink, a shade that might be too much if there was a lot going on here, but the lines are blessedly simple.
Kelly green is another popular color right now, and I love how shaggy this is.
I couldn’t pull off one of these but they are fun, and I appreciate that no critters were murdered in order to produce them.
I got the Free People oversized lilac fake fur that I saw on GOACA last year and it is my favorite thing in the whole world. I look like a muppet. People on the street ask if they can pet me. It is glorious! Please, please can we have some more winter?
Warning: Purple Fake Fur Coats
Back in the early nineties, I had a medium shade purple fake fur. Friends nicknamed me Grimace.
I am not very good at putting color on my body––yellow throw pillow?––not a problem––pink sweater?––uuhhhhh….maybe not. However, I love all these faux fur options for a dash of color that isn’t an all day long commitment (like, say, a sweater). Great way to begin the week!
Love the blue double breasted and the lilac oversized , great post all around, Kim, thank you! I have a black faux fur knee length coat with an oversized collar that I bought at Nordstrom for a song, and it’s the warmest coat I’ve ever owned. It’s like a fake Astrakhan. Depending on the accessories, it can read plain, or Noted Kook. I love it!
I’m such a neutrals person that I don’t think I’d feel like myself in color. But I love the shape of the first one. It would most certainly cover a bulky sweater.

And we’re only half-way through.
I loooooove wild fuzzy faux fur! I had a light blue one I just gave to a friend; I still have three leopard ones (a newish one from Target, a super-broad-shouldered vintage ’80s one from a thrift, and an early ’60s swing coat with big Bakelite buttons I got at Love Saves the Day in the East Village in the ’90s) and somewhere around here there’s a thrifted pink one.
