Things I bought, things I want

26

A stylist I know referred to spring and summer fashion as “amateur hour,” and I knew exactly what she meant, and you probably do too. There’s just something about fall clothes that feels chicer and somehow more consequential—even if all we’re talking about here are clothes. I haven’t purchased much for myself lately—I kind of hate what fashion is doing at the moment—but I do have my eye on quite a few things, like these cropped straight leg jeans from Mother Denim. Here is a similar pair from Levi’s that costs about half as much as those do.

I did order this packable hoodie puffer from The Arrivals, which comes in a few more subdued hues, but of course I had to go for this yellow. It’s going to be the ideal layer under coats, I think.

I went away for a quick overnight recently, and decided—since I was bringing so little—that I’d put what I needed in a backpack, and boy was I reminded of how much easier it is to carry things strapped to your back and not hanging from your shoulder, say. So now I’m looking for a slightly more polished version, and this calfskin one from Rag & Bone looks pretty ideal. It even comes with a laptop sleeve.

This faux shearling vest, layered under a denim jacket, would be aces.

Don’t these boots look astonishingly walkable? And the army green is practically a neutral.

Such a stylish little sweater jacket that reminds me of Agnes B in its prime.

I think this corduroy popover would go into pretty constant rotation if I purchased it—the terra cotta color is cool, and it looks super-soft.

These coated joggers look like the ideal alternative to sweatpants if you’re down for upping your pants game, but still want to be comfortable.

And, as if on cue, Nili Lotan has introduced a new pant shape that I want badly. In this color, they look like old school Carhartt pants, but cut for a woman.

This coat feels kind of French to me, and I love that it has a hood.

A chunky cardigan in a brown that I truly don’t mind (click through to see the other colors it comes in).

And finally, I have been waiting for months and months for Clare V to have their Gosee bag in army green back in stock, and now that it is, I’m having a tough time pulling the trigger. What do you think, ladies, should I go for it?

Damn you, Kim. You just added a ton to my “Things I Want” list…and those joggers may be on their way soon.

I am always partial to olive green anything – I am quite sad that those boots are $$$. And if you are hesitating on the bag, it’s a no. Whenever there is gap of time in aquiring a thing, it seems if the desire fades then, well, it wasn’t the right thing after all.

100% (as the kids would say), regarding that desire minus time, may or may not equal acquisition. Also, not loving fashion right now. With the exception of military/forest green, earth tones look terrible on me.

What I was going to say. If it no longer sings to you, there’s probably a reason why.

Can I just say that I’m having a hard time getting into/figuring out the new silhouette/color palette? I definitely sense that there has been a general shift in style this year but I’m either not feeling it or not getting it (other than the prevalence of coats and jackets). This is not a complaint about or judgment of your choice. I’m just confused because I would normally be all over a post like this one, and this season nothing is hitting me. Probably good for my bank account anyway.

It’s a lovely handbag. You have a great eye.

Nevertheless, if you find yourself wondering, “Should I buy this?”, isn’t the answer usually, “No”?

Me Too – it’s the perfect size and that color is a neutral to my basic wardrobe. I was in the mood to cheer myself up and well… this sure did

I love the brown sweater, it’s perfect with my coloration. And the gilet vest-! Dozens of ways to wear that, and all so luxe and enviable.

So when wearing a Chelsea boot, the best denim option is a slim, cropped leg? I really struggle with jeans and boots every year! I often think a pointed toe boot looks better with a wider leg, but darned if I can find a comfortable, every day pointed toe boot.

Have you seen the Tamara Mellon “Go West”? I wear mine constantly in the fall. (Might be shorter than what you’re looking for?) They do occasionally go on sale, which is when I snagged mine.

I like the bag and I like army green this year. I had forgotten about earth tones and it turns out I look great in them. The Madewell cardie is nice, but those chunky ones remind me that my grandma used to knit them for me back in the day and I refused to wear them and now I wish I still had one.

It’s taking ALL of my self-control not to order that yellow puffer. I’m always drawn to yellow but it has to be the exact right hue and often it’s not. This one looks sunny and great for different skin tones. Please give us an update when it arrives Kim!

I got that bag when I happened to be in NY for one of your Clare V events. I love it and use it all the time. It’s perfect for an autumnal glass of wine with friends kind of vibe, sturdy and lovely texture.

Echoing a comment above, damn you, Kim! I have a weakness for shearling (and sheep-related things, more generally…). My heart dropped a little when I saw the gilet thing was from COS. I’ve been disappointed with a lot of their stuff, so am afraid this would be another failed attempt. Mostly, the price has been too high for the quality. Also, as NYC resident, I get annoyed by things priced just above $110, since sales tax kicks in. All that said, a shearling hooded gilet! Especially in black! I am very, very tempted despite all of those reservations.

I love the jeans! I just bought these from Madewell and they look similar to me. Those coated joggers also look pretty great. I also agree we are in a weird place with fashion right now. I’ve picked up a few things but have also been shopping less which is a good thing. I also realize that I tend to like things that aren’t very fussy in nice fabrics (think Vince). I’m trying not to buy what I already own which can be my tendency as well.

Madewell really has great jeans. They’re the only brand I buy pants from online because their sizing is always so consistent.

These are exactly what I’ve been searching for but damn if they don’t have a 27 and a 29 while I need a 28.

That Sezane sweater jacket is calling my name! Agree re the handiness of backpacks. They are so much easier on the shoulders/back.
