There are so many cool sweatshirts out there right now

In case you’ve ever wondered if I’m one of those work-at-home types who lounges about in sweats all day, or the kind who gets dressed to the nines just to toil on the laptop at her kitchen table, the answer is that I fall somewhere in between those two extremes. I get dressed—usually pretty casually—and put on makeup daily, even if I’m not scheduled to see anyone, because it helps me sit down and get motivated to write. But now that sweatshirts are getting so snappy, I feel like maybe that should be my new uniform, and that I could even get away with wearing one to, say, a lunch date without looking like I’ve given up entirely. Like this tie-dye number, for example, which is on the pricier side, but because the print is so sophisticated—especially for tie-dye—I think it might be worth it.

And here’s a zebra print in blue and black—which regular readers know is possibly my favorite color combination. I also like it a lot in the pink.

I’m a fan of the neckline here, as well as the subtle colorblock situation.

The puff sleeves here are a lively and feminine touch.

I like the drop shoulders and overall slouchy vibe here.

The idea of a V-neck sweatshirt appeals, and feels a little more polished somehow.

This black on black leopard print specimen is pretty nicely priced.

I think this zip-neck sweatshirt has a certain Euro-chic allure.

This twist front option is a good choice for those of us looking to camouflage a little stomach pooch.

The star print here is just desperately cute, and I may have to go for it.

I wouldn’t typically go in for something like a sweatshirt with a heart on it—too cute—but this one is so excellently graphic that I just might.

I can’t tell if this is pale, pale lavender or kind of a blush, but I do think it is very nice.

This looks roomy without being bulky, and I like the pops of color.

I like the idea of a raw hem on a sweatshirt—it’s so easy and comfortable.

Just a really stupendous camo print.

There are side zippers on this one, which I think is a cool detail.

And finally: something about this snake print feels really luxe to me. Here’s another snake print that’s not quite so expensive (though still not cheap).

I already have too many snappy “fashion” sweatshirts, but I want all of these, too. Thanks Kim!

I own the Wilt in a stripe so apparently I’m ok with paying 3 figures for a sweatshirt but I am considerably less enthused that the good ones, more and more, are cotton/synthetic blends. I’d be interested to know which fibers, other than cotton, y’all are good with from a (ahem) climate control standpoint.

Although I sort of try to avoid buying new synthetics, just bc they supposedly shed particles in the wash and it gets in the ocean … I don’t have any easy way to answer your question so I kind of don’t go there. Torment myself over whether I should only wear bamboo?? Not today! At least not until some group comes up with a way to know.

And for me, the labor issues are more important … but it’s not easy to find out about that either. Even the Gap won’t say they are for treating labor well anymore (at least not the last time I checked). This doesn’t mean the Gap/BR etc are *not* treating people well … just that I have *no way* of freaking knowing about it. Very, very, very frustrating!!!! But, they’ll talk to you about “sustainability,” wtf that is.

It’s enough to make me go back to bed. But if anyone knows anything, I’d love to hear. I prioritize climate change above pretty much all other enviro concerns, not that I am anywhere near where I’d like to be vis-a-vis daily footprint. Farkle.

agree Everlane is pretty transparent (I’m trying to believe), but in our current trumpian dystopian world I find I’m having trust issues with practically everything. I think Patagonia is supposed to be on the better side of the environmental issues as well.

I have a Tasc bamboo 1/4 zip that I LOVE – fabric is buttery soft and always feels cool on your skin but also keeps you just warm enough, breathes like a dream, doesn’t get stinky. I’m a convert. Athleta has modal wraps and sweatshirts made of beech and they’re similar. Freefly is another bamboo supplier and they just came out with a snap-collar sweatshirt and a hoodie fleece. I’m going to treat myself to one or the other next paycheck.

actually cotton is not good for the environment, and the dying process is notoriously bad.

I also love the Ganni pants that are shown with the tie-dye number. And the Anthro sweatshirt that looks like it’s inside out––all through high school I wore my boyfriend’s grey heavy duty crewneck sweatshirt inside out. I thought I was so cool for doing so, but of course I wasn’t.

I love the heart! You’re right, it’s not twee.

I am partial to Supermaggie’s sweatshirts, which go up to a 2XL and are affordable and have great dreamy/hallucinatory designs that are full of personality but aren’t over the top.

Thanks so much for this post! I have my own business and work from home every day and mainly dress in jeans or leggings. I am desperately needing snappy tops like this I can throw on! LOVE them all.

Why does it anger me to see pricey sweatshirts? Could it be that damned near EVERYTHING angers me these days? Somehow, I don’t think I’m alone in that sentiment (about the world, not the sweatshirts). They’re appealing, though, in an “I guess I’m going to have to relearn how to tie-dye” kind of way.

I love the v-neck styles and find them so much more flattering than crew. You’d think there would be more of them out in the world, but I rarely see them. Thanks for finding some for us.

I would love this! I currently work from home one day a week, but it will soon be four days a week and I’m feeling lost as to how to transition my wardrobe.

I have worked from home the past four years and I always dress the part because it makes me focus more and feel like I’m ready for business. I also have three kids in school, so I make myself get up before they do and get myself ready, so I only have to focus on packing lunches and getting them out the door. The other parents at the bus stop have commented on how I always look put together that early in the morning. Now, I don’t wear a suit or anything. I stick to “business casual,” which is often pants with a button down or sweater. I’ll do the skirts and dresses in warm weather because I find them more comfortable. I also always throw on some makeup (tinted moisturizer, blush, eyeliner, mascara, brows and lipstick). I never, ever go with sweats or yoga pants. It’s really more of a mindset than a need for a new wardrobe, as I’m sure you have items like this already in your closet. Just ask yourself what you would wear to go out to lunch with a friend or out to dinner at a nice (but not formal) restaurant.

Ditto. Is that a condom wrapper? Enquiring minds…

It is an awfully cute rabbit though.

Can you tell me more about the design, Kimbersam? I love it, but I’m not exactly sure what I’m supporting with that statement.

My eye exam for new prescription reading glasses isn’t until next month: think putting on my current prescription reading glasses and pulling out a magnifying glass to read caller id on our landline phone (possibly the most middle aged phrase I’ve ever typed). So, while I know the bunny is cute and see the Unfind Me bit, those are the only things I could confidently describe. Thank you for mentioning that version. I have now learned that I shouldn’t purchase clothing with graphics when an eye exam is overdue.

I so understand … lately I am noticing more and more tiny print on things. And I’ll have to look again bc I thought the Unfind Me was just the name of the sweater, somehow… I couldn’t read the print on the tiny wrapper of, well, whatever it is being wrapped.

Landline phones sound better. We should totally be preserving those lines.

Ah, no, I just forgot it was on the shirt. The bunny is still cute. But I don’t understand! Why am I unfinding…? Oh well.
