Taking requests: hair accessories

14

I can’t find the email in which a reader asked for this particular post, but it was brief, and basically said please show us some nice hair accessories, so here that is for you, anonymous reader and whoever else is interested. I’m starting with this splurgy-but-gorgeous snake hair pin, because it is just so much excellence.

These beaded ponytail holders bring a little color to the party.

These barrettes are by jewelry designer Gabriela Artigas, and they’re not especially cheap, but they are so graceful and pretty. Here’s something similar and not quite as pricey.

This is a cheaper knockoff of this ponytail holder, and I wish I’d known about it when I sprang for the latter.

This bendable leather cuff is slightly rock chick in a way that I can really get behind.

Scrunchies are having such a moment that I could have done a post on them alone, only I don’t entirely know how I feel about their return, so I’ll just show you this cute floral number and consider that particular base covered.

This bun cover reminds me of something the summer camp counselor who ran the crafts shed would wear.

These bobby pins with little pearl-like beads would look so nice holding hair up in a twist.

I have been told twice by two different hair salon people that if you are going to put your hair back in a ponytail or in some other off-your-face-and-out-of-your-way for exercise you should use a scrunchie because they will keep your hair from breaking that a regular elastic band will do. (as I type this I have my hair back in a scrunchie and I don’t think typing is really any form of exercise). I had a leather bun cover exactly like the tortoise shell one you show from 1967 to 1970 when it fell apart because of overuse. I bought it on The Drag at the University of Texas in Austin when I was there for a summer program for high school students. I thought it made me look like I was the coolest hippie girl on the planet. (for the record, it did not because I was not) I love the tortoise shell one because it looks so French chic. And that snake hair pin––Lordy––talk about adding a dash of mystery woman to an outfit in an oh-so-cash way!!

I have more expensive barrette in silver. Now I can afford a gold one too! Yay!

I suggest people look on Etsy too, for hair pins. When I got married (at 53) I decided I wanted rocks and crystals in my hair (yes like actual small pebbles) and sure enough I found some bobby pins on Etsy that provided just that.

My long-but-baby-fine hair can’t hold most metal sticks, though I love them! I prefer wood for its lightness – this Etsy version is a current favorite:

Interesting but I need to see them in someone’s hair.

Kimmie … I heart the snake hairpin!!!! Well not for myself, I would probably lose it, but it would look excellent on someone else. Things I Didn’t Know I Needed …

Another thing I like about hanging around here… I had *no idea* there was a scrunchie moment happening.

My 20-yr old daughter wore one this summer and I was very confused. Were scrunchies in again? Good lord, it must mean that acid-washed denim isn’t far behind!

My 15 year old daughter bought a pair of acid washed mom jeans this summer. She calls them her mom jeans, which made me LOL. I tried to explain the concept that mom jeans were EXTREMELY undesirable when they first found their way onto soccer moms everywhere, but she sighed and rolled her eyes and tried to tell me how out of touch I am. Which, I suppose, is true.

I have “the smallest ponytail in the world”…yup, it’s an official distinction….but I still like to wear hair clips, and that leather pony holder is cool. I bought a gold circle barrette from Madewell that I love, too. It works -barely.

I own that snake hair pin, and I can attest that it is truly the most sultry hair accessory in existence. I wear it when I need to channel Medusa, and it definitely gives me a boost of confidence.

A friend of mine suggested Ficcare clips to break out of my ponytail trend and tread lightly into the waters of the long-haired world of french twists and messy buns. I am in fully plunge now and own three of the Maximas Clips. They are easy, reliable, durable, and come in oh so many colors and sizes. https://www.ficcare.com/maximas

I love this hair pin from Reed Clarke. I have longish, thick hair, and it can hold it all up in a top knot all day without slipping. https://www.shopreedclarke.com/products/ys-park-gold-4-hair-pin
