Suddenly, loafers (again)

18

Interestingly, and quite out of nowhere, several stylish friends have expressed to me a desire for a pair of these preppy classics. Others have already taken the plunge, and I have to say that I’m intrigued. These are nice and clunky, just how I like, and the pale pink is cute (though it does come in a few other colors).

I know that a number of you are fans of the brand M. Gemi and this shearling-lined number from them is just aces in the army green.

If you’ve been hanging out here for a while, you know that I have a very low tolerance for logos or other flashy, telltale signs that a piece is designer. But I do make an exception for these Gucci loafers with their excellently classic horse bit hardware. They’re far from cheap, however, so check out this more reasonably priced pair.

I dig the lug soles on this pair from Madewell.

This fringe loafer is nice and dandyish; here’s something similar but cheaper.

And finally, the platform sole here appeals.

I don’t mind the chunky hardware here.

And this high-heeled pair is impossibly stylish.

I’ve been loving the patent leather Franco Sarto Carolynn Lug sole loafers in blue. Very inexpensive, comfortable, and I get compliments on them all day long!

When I started a new job a few years ago, I waited for my bonus and splurged on the Gucci loafers. They are extremely comfortable and I believe a worthwhile investment piece. A friend suggested that once I broke them in I immediately take them to Angelo’s on 52nd to have thin rubber soles put on and I’m glad I spent the extra $40 to do so. Of course, Covid – so I haven’t really worn them in the past two years but I’ll be getting them back into the rotation within the next few weeks.

I own several pairs of the Sam Edelman Loraine loafers. In the “Before Times” they made them in a multitude of leathers and other fabrics. They also made them in wide.

I’m really into the chunky loafer – I’d go for the Madewell ones but they’re sold out in my size. I have a pair of old J Crew unembellished black loafers that suit me just fine for the time being.

It’s 1998 all over again! Chunky platform loafers were my jam with my school uniform, and then into college with the Gap “long and lean” jeans. I mean, I’m wearing combat boots again, so never say never…

😂 that’s what I was gonna say! I had a cheapo version of the last pic (the heeled ones) that I wore nearly every day of my first Real Office Job™️ in 1998.

Size up in the M Gemis unless you have banana feet; I have two pairs of the shearling lined styles and they’re both quite narrow. That said, I love them SO much. Perfect travel shoe because your feet will never get cold nor sweaty, and shearling is naturally antimicrobial, so they will never get smelly, either. Like wearing your bed slippers on a road trip or a plane.

I absolutely love chunky black loafers (definitely checking out that Madewell option) even though they make me look like I’m on the cover of the first Specials album.

I want navy blue ones! Chunky works well for me because I have little feet.

They have two heights of lug soles now, been considering them.

I love the look of loafers, but I’ve never found any that fit well enough to be as comfortable as the oxfords and wing tips I collect. I could easily go for a chunky lug sole, but the elegant Gemi drivers would be wonderful for a long plane ride. The Gemi link goes to a men’s shoe. The women’s version is less expensive and comes in luscious colors. I just might have to spring for a pair.

I’ve had the Madewell ones for about 6 months now. They take a take a while to break in and still aren’t the comfiest. But when I pair them with my slouchy olive green chinos, a rugged belt, and a black v-neck tee, I congratulate myself on an outfit that feels very Kim France approved.

Me too and I am stuck on the white and cream ones and especially if platformed. It is tricky to get them to stay on my feet though.

In high school I wore Weejuns constantly and am not sure I can bring myself to do the traditional loafer look again, but just ordered these – they look like a low risk way to reenter the loafer pool: https://shop.mango.com/us/women/shoes-leather/leather-penny-loafers_17040161.html
