Pants for when you’re tired of wearing sweats

36

I know I’ve been a proponent of wearing sweatpants as streetwear, but I must admit I’m tired of shlepping around in them, and have been craving hard pants—but hard pants that look like they’re on the softer side, like these Helmut Lang trousers, which have an appealingly military-ish vibe.

These tapered trousers from Vince have the just-right amount of stretch, and are the just-right amount of cropped too.

These high-waisted wide-leg pants come in a few good colors, but I’m keen on this slightly dark yellow.

These nice, slouchy army pants also come in this very good rust, and I’m really torn as to which one I like better. Here’s a pair that’s similar but cheaper.

These have an elastic waistband and look like they’d be as comfortable and easy to move around in as sweats, but they appear to be pretty polished too. Great pants for travel when we all start traveling again.

I just really like the green hue and roomy fit of this pair.

These slouchy Isabel Marant joggers would be just perfect for the warmer weather that will head our way eventually.

A chino with a not-too-high, not-too-low waistline.

The pleated knees on this navy pair are a cool touch.

This super-stretchy pair of pants is like if a trouser and a legging had a baby.

This skinny stretch wool trouser is not the least bit cropped, which I know will make some of you happy.

These look comfortable enough to sleep in, but are completely street-worthy as well.

A very spiff pair of cigarette pants in a nice rich olive.

These faux leather trousers have a nice high waist—for those of you who prefer such a thing.

A pair of wool cropped pants that are delightfully menswearish.

And I kind of love this heathered grey plaid pair for the same reason.

And finally: I love how the plaid print here is just barely visible.

36 Thoughts on Pants for when you’re tired of wearing sweats

I must admit that I loved many of these until I got to the lengths and cringed. Cropped pants may look great on many, and I wish I was one of those, but I have frequent swelling of my calves, ankles, and feet. I’m embarrassed to show my ankles (people stare at them and make comments – well meaning about possible medical concerns, but still…). It’s getting difficult to find readymade full length options. Realizing I need to haul out the ol’ sewing machine.

PS I’ve had lots of medical tests to rule out scary clots and such and my docs continue to try to figure things out. My freaky lower limbs have been doing this for decades. 🙁

I’m guessing I should be embarrassed to admit that I can recognize if a product image is from ShopBop, Anthro, Everlane, Nordstrom or even Nili Lotan, thanks to all the exposure I’ve gotten over the years of being a devoted GOACA reader. The Anthro and ShopBop, well, are also from years of my own research. 🙂

Those high-waist wide-leg pants from Anthro are so good. I have them in 2 colors but none of the current ones. Very tempting to nab a 3rd pair.

What do y’all think of the Anthro Roamer Utility in lavender? I am dying for a pair of pants in that color for Spring.

Me too and they are a little busy but in a good way. I’m hoping someone will do them in the greyish version of the color to tone them down a bit.

If this is any indication of cool, Nili Lotan is featuring lavender this spring.

Lilac and Lavender are super in this season. I’ve been looking at that pant too in olive.

Came to say the same (because they seem pretty danged perfect!)

And I’ll put my comment here so I’m not all over this thread: Does anyone else feel like they’re wearing Garanimals when they wear color on the bottom? And especially if there’s color bottom AND top!

Loved this week’s podcast! Tiffany Dufu is indeed truly inspiring! As for comfortable non sweatpants…I have two pair of Sanctuary Standard Surplus pants that look very similar to several pair shown here. They are lightweight so I wear them in the spring and summer, but I’ve had them for maybe three or four years and they wear like iron without feeling like iron. Highly recommend. Had my first vaccine dose today. No allergic reaction. Feeling victorious.

Kim, I have a question: why do you think 90% of the pants out there are cropped? I think a slim ankle pant looks great, but to my eye, a wide legged cropped pant is incredibly unflattering.

Thinking the same! I just can’t get on board with cropped pants unless they are elastic/cuffed at the bottom. Doesn’t matter how bitchin’ your Converse tennies are. Frump city.

And cropped to the extreme. As a 5’1 person, I personally love a crop trend because it means more options for me, but I’ve noticed some “regular” pants with inseams of 26, which would be cropped even on me!

Whereas for me, if there are elastic at the bottoms, they are sweatpants. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I just don’t consider them regular pants anymore. Odd. … … … It is getting a little bit hard for me not to comment on your governor, Kim. Wow are you guys tough on your pols. (The kissing at work claim would be bad if true though. No idea if it is or isn’t.) I mean, we already knew he couldn’t get along with anyone. I am trying hard not to yell “snowflake” at the top of my lungs. Good thing we aren’t talking about it here bc otherwise I might offend someone. And even with that, it is good we have so much press freedom and so much free time that we even have time for stuff like this. Oooookay.

Most men of a certain type in power are the same. Cuomo’s politics are better than Trump’s for sure, and people were desperate for SOME Covid guidance in the beginning. I understand that feeling but I don’t share it. I am, and always will be really allergic to “charismatic” men of any political persuasion who wield their power in a particular way. Run the other way, ladies.

I have a whole conspiracy theory about the Cuomo KKissing the Ladies thing…Cyrus Vance is getting ready to throw the book at Trump and Democrats can’t been seen to be lenient on GovC, but ready to trash trump (even though trump IS trash) so they are coming down hard on the Gov. And I’m not saying Cuomo doesn’t deserve it, however, everyone knew he was a bully and a hotdogger before Covid hit, but he did do a good job shutting things down and eventually getting control of the pandemic situation. NOT that that excuses him AT ALL. I’m just saying…”they” are throwing him under the bus for a political reason (and he no doubt also deserves it).

I’m not interested in defending Cuomo. At the same time, New Yorkers had the choice between Cuomo or an actress from Sex in The City who may have great political positions but literally had no experience in government. Who would you rather have had leading the COVID response? I’m not a New Yorker so maybe I’m missing something (like, were there ever other truly viable candidates), but it seems like there are a lot of journalists blaming New Yorkers for electing the guy, when what other options did they have? I think some Democrats unfortunately seem inclined to brush off the Cuomo story because understandably they’re frustrated and rightly freaked out that Democrats are the only party holding their public officials accountable and they feel like, why even bother, when the other side has decided there’s no behavior they won’t excuse (except criticizing Trump, apparently)? I don’t agree with that, but I understand it.

An aside: In my country, a major media outlet has announced that it will open an online casino as a side gig. Nothing says freedom of the press and guardian of the public interest like virtual slot machines. Corporate news media here also beg for government handouts so they can report on — what else? — government. Now they’re going head-to-head with government for gaming revenue. We live in an alternate reality.

Is it the pandemic that has unleashed a sartorial, “We’re not gonna take it. Oh No! We ain’t gonna take it. We’re not gonna take it, anymore,” amongst us GOACAs? I’ve never seen such vocal and consistent bucking of trends in the comments. Full disclosure, I fell hard for wide-legged crops and will be sad to see them go.

I have also noticed a lot of women are fiercely against trends these days. Are we never going to switch things up, wear the same styles until our dying days? I’ve always thought it fun to scroll through the decades and check out the styles.

Did anyone watch the Senate interview the FBI Director this morning? It made me so mad! Essentially, he hardly answered any questions and the Q-Repubs did the usual “don’t look over here” grandstanding.

Yes, he’s such a doof. How is it not the head of the FBI’s job to understand what the ideologies of domestic terrorists are? He literally said this, and it makes no sense. And Senators need to ask for the numbers of deaths caused by antifa members vs. right wingers so the Repubs can stop with this idiotic Fox News talking point.
