I will definitely be doing a post on winter-weight puffers sooner than later, but today we’re going to look at ones that work for the kind of weather we’re having right now. What I like about a lightweight quilted jacket is that it’s good for really transitional days, when the temperature varies depending what time it is. This reversible one from Veronica Beard is, I think, polished enough to wear on an evening out, but great with jeans on the weekend too.
Here’s a more casual option from Allsaints, with a waist cinch to keep things looking sufficiently polished.
I am crazy for this traditional quilt-inspired number: the sophisticated cut keeps it from looking frumpy.
The drop shoulder here is a cool touch, and I dig the (kind of lightly) burnt orange hue.
I zoomed in on this bomber to see if it’s made of denim, and as far as I can tell it’s not, but I do like that it looks like it is.
This comes from J. Crew and is available in a few other hues, but this off-white looks freshest to me right now.
A super clean-lined recycled polyester jacket from Cos that—like so many items at Cos—looks pricier than it is.
The length here, as well as the front patch pockets, make this an elegant option.
I like the pop of orange, as well as the half-quilted, half-fleece aspect of this pullover from Veronica Beard.
And the corduroy details on this fleece jacket are just aces.
A floral coat with an appealingly chic silhouette; also, here is a short version of it.
A nifty Barbour jacket that I might size up on for ease of layering.
The topsy-turvy quilted pattern here is kind of fun.
And I like the double breasted-ness and bandana lining on this Xirena jacket. Here it is in a khaki colorway.
Just a cute shirt jacket that doesn’t cost a fortune, from Topshop.
This liner jacket has a fleece interior, making it super-cozy.
This one also comes in an off-white, but I kind of love this watermelon-y color.
A quilted version of J. Crew’s ever-popular Field Jacket: perfection.
And finally: this fleece-lined cape doesn’t totally fit with this category, but I’m such a fan I included it anyway.
I caved and bought the very trendy, possibly very bonkers, Frankie Shop quilted jacket that is all over IG. I’m still debating if I should keep it, but then why not a bonkers jacket to cheer up the winter that is coming? That said, Kim you have shown so many great versions that it’s hard to choose!
It would be nice to see a couple of non-boxy options for jackets. Non-boxy shirts would also be nice to see on occasion.
The longer blue floral looks like it could be a Liberty + Comme De Garcon collab–if there were such a thing.
I am commenting here because I don’t know anywhere else that would care– and y’all might not either, but maybe?– but I was doing the seasonal closet switcheroo over the weekend and trying on clothes, and um, I found a Comme des Garcons dress that I forgot I owned. It was a gift, received Xmas 2019, and (obviously) never had a reason in 2020 to wear it. And it fits! Better than when I got it, now that I am, err, filling things out more, which was the best surprise. I have an in-person event in a few weeks (and I am skittish about and still might bail), but if I don’t, damn it, I am showing up as the (Middle-Aged) High Priestess of (Avant-Garde) Goth. My partner said I looked like Nadia from What We Do In the Shadows, which I took as a high compliment, and realized that is the style I should be aiming for.
Anyway, finding an unworn CdG dress was kind of like winning the lottery. I have no opinions on quilted jackets (given my Nadia/Goth comment, no surprise there) but Kim’s selections are lovely as always, for those of the quilted jacket-wearing persuasion.
Nothing like unearthing a treasure in your closet! And if I could, I would dress as Nadia every day. I bet it looks spectacular on you 🙂
I got that Z Supply jacket in washed black after I think Kim had previously shown the gray/black camo version. I dawdled on the camo version and it sold out before I pulled the trigger. Anyway, love how light the jacket is — it’s perfect for NorCal.
A few years ago I found an above-the-knee length quilted jacket that was army green on the outside with a Liberty print on the inside (J. Crew). Technically reversible, but I think the print out would be a bit bonkers. I wear it SO MUCH. I love the options here. Maybe it’s the brisk morning air today but that cape is calling me.
I have a J. Crew quilted jacket, with the bonkers Liberty print on the outside and six(!) usable pockets. It’s my favorite coat, and warm, too, because its lining is insulated. Not reversible, however.
I wore the lululemon quilted number in that fab Juniper Green to work today and got SO many compliments. (Full disclosure, I work for the company and so was wearing it on the sales floor…) I bought it after reading Andrea Alinett’s recent post and will be taking her advice and layering it over my Alex Mill utility suit 🙂
Susan G, are you out there? Just wanted to say thanks for your Vader booty link in the comments on Kim’s boots with chunky soles post on 9/29. Mine arrived today and I absolutely adore them. Thank you!
Vader BOOTS (giggle). They are so funky and unique!
I am having a very bad day, and the idea of Vader booty cheers me immensely.
I just ordered this one from Mango at30%off and I love it so far: https://shop.mango.com/us/women/coats-puffer—quilted/satin-quilted-jacket_17036704.html
We’ll see how it washes up, but I figured it would be good for wearing over a chunky sweater on hikes. Or just because!
A few years ago I bought a thin little Uniqlo ultra light down jacket that rolls up into a little bag, and it has turned out to be SO useful. In Southern California I don’t need anything much heavier, but when I travel in colder climates it’s a really warm liner under a wool peacoat. Uniqlo still makes them and they’re well priced.
I caved and bought one of these last year, MaryAlice, and it turned out that I wore it WAY more often than any other coat in my collection! It’s so lightweight but warm and accommodates sweaters. Thumbs up!
Yes! I have the knee-length version of this in navy and it’s an absolute lifesaver!
Quilted jackets fall squarely in my “I feel like I should love them but none have really caught my fancy [yet]” category.
Same here. They always look more like coat linings than actual coats, and the fabric doesn’t seem cozy to me. They also have a very outdoorsy, nature-loving person type vibe, and that’s not my thing.
