Just a bunch of pretty, feminine tops

11

Lately, I’m looking for tops I can wear on dates: pieces that are a little—but not too—sexy, and that I will feel eminently comfortable in, because dating is tough enough without the added bother of overly fussy clothes.  This is just the kind of dark floral I really go for, and the shape is so easy.

The lip print here is just so good, and the smocking at the shoulders makes this shirt come off much softer than most button-downs.

A pretty sexy, slightly metallic, drapey top.

Maybe this doesn’t quite belong here since it’s a sweater, but it reads very top-like somehow.

Tie necklines are usually way too prissy for me, but the one here hangs low, which gives it a more laid-back feel.

Just a really good red with a flattering neckline, and I like the ruffled sleeves.

The lace here with the Indian print is kind of weird, but totally works, and I’m not sure why.

When you’re in the mood to bare a bit—or just have something sexy peeking out from under a blazer—this cami.

I am dying for this top—it looks as everyday-wearable as it does kind of special.

This is on the sexy side, but in a nice, quiet way.

If I were to wear any blouse with a string or a tie on a date that string or tie would end up in my spaghetti sauce (so, I know, order something that is not covered in sauce)––that said, I love the Ulla Johnson blouse (or I did until I realized it was polyester––for me that means a rash and sweat convention) and it does, in white, bear a remarkable resemblance to Seinfeld’s Pirate Blouse.

To be safe I’d go with the velvet cami (on which I’d spill salad dressing) because men like to touch velvet.

So I ordered a pair of those velvet Tretorns Kim featured last week (In raisin! So good!!) – do I need to be worried about random men touching my feet in public now?

Ok this is probably just me, but that lip print is totally giving me Rocky Horror vibes. Which is not a bad thing at all, unless it inspires someone to throw toast or rolls of toilet paper at me while I’m wearing it (Dammit, Janet!).

As much as I love fun sleeves—billowing, ruffled, kimono, etc.—I tend to stay away from them when going out, much for the same reason c.w., above, avoids ties on blouses: I’ve doused my cuffs enough times in food and drink to send my dry cleaner’s kids to college.

So for dates, I stick to cami-style tops and a cool evening-style jacket.

Both camis are winners, but I think the Derek Lam top would be great as datewear. You gotta be you, but a lot of men don’t get prints (I.e. in interior design.) The fabric almost has a cool, tailored, menswear vibe, but the cut is sexy. I’m not as dedicated a fan of slouch as Kim, but the drapeyness of that top looks awesome, inviting without being slutty.

I like that one too … I think it’s more of a third date top though. Build the anticipation right?

Whereas … the bare shoulder look … that top actually does look quite nice, but I find them illogical and troubling. Like sleeveless mock turtlenecks. A category I think should just die. Though, I would not send in the Marines over it.
