Seeing as how we’re all spending so much time indoors lately, a pair of these feels pretty essential; this splurgy moc clog from Jenni Kayne has been on my mind for a while now, because it’s so great-looking, and you can wear it outside as well as in.
I like that these have a wallabee-ish vibe.
I own this Birkenstock slipper and adore it—it’s comfortable, of course, but also deeply warm, and it comes in several good colors.
Both the pop of orange and leopard print on this pair from Sorel are loud in the best possible way.
So tempted by this sneaker-ish pair from Vans.
This streamlined pair looks like something astronauts would wear in space, and I’m always a sucker for grey and yellow together (if you are not, however, they do come in a few other colorways).
These wool clogs are appealingly preppy.
Just a well-priced fleece number from Madewell.
The slate blue hue here is really good.
These Allbirds loungers are rather spiff, don’t you think?
Here’s a dirt cheap pair from Uniqlo.
These are made by Tempur-Pedic—I wasn’t aware they were in the footwear racket—so I think they must be pretty comfortable.
You can’t go too far wrong with a classic pair of Minnetonkas.
This Rag& Bone version isn’t cheap—at all—but it is rather chic, and comes in several good colors.
I like that these cashmere slippers are compact enough to travel with.
My friend Tally introduced me to Glerups, which she swears by, and since she lives in Canada and knows what cold is, I trust that they are very warm.
And finally: I like the stud details on this chic Veronica Beard mule.
I bought the Glerups this fall when a sock-enabled slip on the stairs gave my back a real rattle (fun stuff to think about as aging – the danger of falls!) because they have a version with a rubberized sole. And they are indeed incredibly warm. I also have owned the Uniqlo ones and they are very very soft.
I bought a pair of the lightweight Mahabis this summer and they are very comfortable with a good non slip sole (I’ve worn them outside in the snow to the trash bin) and some arch support. I just washed them and they look great.
On a slight tangent, what’s the outdoor version of these aka cute Uggs? I have No 6 shearling lined clogs which are so cozy to put on, but 1) they squash my arch to such an extent that I think they messed them up significantly and 2) I kind of totter on them and have twisted my ankles wearing them before.
I love slippers. (My instagram handle involves the word “slippers,” no less). I’ve had a less stylish version of the Haflingers for years– very comfortable, good arch support, and they don’t smell. A bit of the shearling has worn away at the heel of some fuzzy Arizonas, but they’re still super comfortable and remind me of puttering around Scotland. I’ve got some Ugg shearling slides I bought at Heathrow when a bag with my main slippers was lost, and they’re comfy, but less padded than the Haflingers.
All that said…the Mahabis look super cool, and gosh I wish I could wear them on the upper deck of the 747, but, well, that’s never happening again, alas. But I’m this close to ordering some of those metallic Babas from Sabah, because they combine my love of shiny things and sheep, and this pandemic seems never ending, and since I’ve been wearing the same 2 pairs of slippers for an eternity now, I’m going to justify them.
What I really want is a pair of velvet smoking slippers to swan around in, but as glamorous as it would be, I need something more practical. Will be checking out these recommendations.
I love a Birkenstock Boston but my fave slippers are the Ugg Scuffette, which I bought in silver glitter a couple of years ago and they delight me every single time I wear them. (Don’t worry, they come in all kinds of regular Ugg colors too: https://www.zappos.com/p/ugg-scuffette-ii-water-resistant-slipper-chestnut-ii/product/107219/color/888138) I don’t wear them outside, though you could given the heartiness of the sole – my foot doesn’t stay in them well, so I need something sturdier if I’m going to be outdoors. But they are good for running down to get the mail or take out recycling in my apartment building.
I’m all about the LL Bean Wicked Good Slipper. They’re warm, last forever, and make your feet look like adorable baked potatoes.
My best pandemic purchase has been a pair of shearling lined Sabah Babas. Heaven! I wear them everyday inside the house to the extent my other shoes are feeling sad and neglected. I love by Babas so much that I’m considering purchasing a second pair in silver as jazzy-but-not-dressy-hang-out-with-friends-shoes, which I’m hoping I will eventually need.

Now you need an incredibly stylish caftan to go with those, Cola!
I am tempted by Sabahs. Do they have any arch support, or are they flat?
Totally flat. The leather molds to your feet but yes, it’s like being barefoot.
Ohhhh….their bright pink flats are so flipping cute.
I just ordered the silver ones! I am super excited to have something new in my life.
So many of these look great. I bought these a few weeks ago and love them – very warm and much plusher than they look (they also come in a leopard print): https://factory.jcrew.com/m/shops/bogo/faux-shearling-slippers/MF021?color_name=dark-nutmeg
I love Allbirds loungers for house shoes. And they are washable. I have the wool for winter and eucalyptus for summer. I like the look of the Vans model.
Wearing my OluKai slippers in that steel blue as I type this. I love them, and totally recommend. Love that they are lined in wool, love that they have the fold down back..and the color is even better IRL.
I’m wearing my Olukai’s too! I like the footbed with arch support, and the ability to fold the back of the slipper up and down.
I bought them after a long series of Ugg slippers. I always love them at first, then don’t like how quickly the shearling wears away under the heel, and ball of the foot.
The Boston Shearling Birkenstock are my BEST purchase of the year! I purchased my reg Birk size. They’re cozy and perfect to wear all the time! I started out with the Jenni Kayne Moc Clog-x2-since my dog enjoys chewing those up?!? 😬 But the Birks can’t be beat.
I just bought the Boston shearling lined Birkenstock as well, I love them!! I did however, need to go up a size from regular sandal size.
What a great collection! I’m so drawn to the Blondo’s from Nordstrom because they’re waterproof which technically makes no sense since I don’t wear slippers out of the condo. I call this kind of brain warp––Eccentric Thinking––because that sounds better than DohDohPeaBrain. I’m also on board with any Birkenstock footwear because they’re are just so dang comfortable (wearing my birk fuzzy lined as I type!).
I have the Boston Shearling Birkenstock and loved them but the fur lining wore out very quickly and I was not happy with how they looked ,but the comfort was great. I now wear soft sole Birkenstock Bostons as my house slippers. These seem to be the only house shoes I can wear that offer enough support for my horrible feet that usually require custom orthotics.
Speaking of custom orthotics…why is it so difficult to find stylish shoes I can put them into? I have some nice Blondo booties that are great but find most brands like Naturalizer and Clarks do not have enough support because they often are not leather or at least I am guessing that is why. Ok, enough going off topic…apologies but feel like my life is spent looking for shoes I can wear and don’t feel the need to hide. Then to add insult to injury, spending a lot of money on said shoes.
Nancy, I hear you on the “life is spent looking for shoes that I can wear and don’t feel the need to high….spending a lot of money on said shoes.” I have mild CP, which translates to major death on shoes, which need to have side support (so no gorgeous slides for me) and no heels. To make it worse, I am a size 5. My default is Docs (even with “work clothes,” – not that I remember what “work clothes” are) and Tevas (talk about UGLY….). Am tempted to buy a pair of short UGGS for indoor only wear.
Eloise, I’m also a size 5 and purchase all my Uggs and Vans in the kids department at Nordstrom. They are EXACTLY the same as the adult sizes, but are literally half the price. They also carry low-heeled dressy shoes for those pre-teen types and some of them (the ones without the glitter) are appropriate for adults! I’ve also purchased some girls shoes from J.Crew. Also, the last time I was able to go into a store (what year was that?) one of the sales people at Nordstrom told me that if I found a pair of shoes I liked on the floor that didn’t come in my size to make certain I ask if they can “be ordered.” Some shoes are made in sizes 5 and 5.5, but the department usually purchases shoes in size 6 and up. Ergo, find a shoe you like that “only comes in a size 6” ask if they can be ordered in a smaller size. You’d think they would do this automatically, but they don’t. Sorry to natter on so…
CW, Thanks for the reminder about Nordstrom’s shoe department (I’ve now got a pair of kids Uggs sitting in my cart). When I worked in a snottier environments where – egads – they cared about footwear or I was young enough to care that they might care about footwear) I used to shop there all the time. They did have lots of pre-teen type shoes (my dad, who had the unenviable job of taking me shoe shopping as a kid calls them “bat mitvah” shoes, although I think that shows my age as many “kids nowadays” wear very high heels, I think). Nordstrom’s service is always top notch but for awhile I had an absolutely wonderful sales person – she’d see me coming and almost literally run into the back and bring out stacks of boxes. I pretty much cried when she left. Neiman Marcus Last Call used to have a decent selection – I wore two pairs of blue suede (yes…) Chanel flats for years after having them resoled many times but neither L C or the shoes are around anymore. Thanks for nattering….
I feel you Nancy! I rely on a small heel lift, and it’s so difficult to find cute shoes, especially sandals, that can accommodate the lift.
Nancy, I could have written every word of this myself — as I sit here in chunky wool socks and my faithful, 5 year-old Bostons. Every. Single. Word.
I really love what Jenni Kayne puts out, but I’ve gotta be honest – I don’t think it’s worth the price. But, man, does she know how to market stuff!
My mom gave me my favorite slippers of all time from LL Bean: https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/70223?feat=sr&term=cat%20slippers&csp=a
They put a smile on my face every time I see them! And my cat loves them, too!
My favorites! I end up buying a new pair every year because I wear them all the time and sockless and they get gross, but I think that would happen with any fuzzy sole slippers. And I just noticed they have new styles-this dandelion ones are fun.
Have you guys tried Asportuguesas? They are Birkenstock-like and come in really jazzy wool felt or a sportier fabric, and in a sneaker style as well as a mule. I stumbled on these in the bright orange and I LOVE them! They’re comfortable and really lightweight. Be ready for LOTS of people asking about them – they are a statement piece in the bright colors! Here they are at Nordstrom, but you can also find them on Amazon.

I can vouch for the Glerups being fantastic! I got the inside pair a few years ago and am now thinking I need the ones with the outdoor sole, too.
They are all so cozy and snuggly!

These are the softest things I’ve ever put on my feet. I never want to take them off tho they will never be as warm as something fleece lined.
Love this post so much! My daughter got Glerups for Christmas and I’m jealous already. A couple of years ago, in the days of travel, I was in Freeport and scored an LLBean sale on these: https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/503422?originalProduct=122287&productId=1723511&attrValue_0=Khaki&pla1=0&mr%3AtrackingCode=C0397CD8-710F-E911-80FF-00505694403D&mr%3AreferralID=NA&mr%3Adevice=c&mr%3AadType=plaonline&qs=3125148&gclid=CjwKCAiAu8SABhAxEiwAsodSZLa_5nEzPof8g6ErkL2x0TsM7qzPXr8-okjh8DlcliYSmPy4NUqbrBoC0FsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&SN=MasterPrompt04_test&SS=B&SN2=FindabilityRecs05_test&SS2=A&SN3=FindabilityProd07_Cat&SS3=B
(hope that link goes through) They are my year round house sandal now.
I loved my Glerups felt boot slippers until they both got two dime-sized holes around the large toe and pinky toe areas. I expected them to last many years and they didn’t even make it to two. Very sad, since they are so warm and comfortable. I will probably not purchase them again.
Putting in a vote for the Glerups too! I have the non-bootie ones and wear them all day every day.
I gotta cover the ankles but I want a suede non rubber bottom so I can nap on the couch so I got some Ross and Snow booties from Nordstroms. OMG so warm
I’m also a huge fan of Glerups. I’ve worn the booties I have probably 90 percent of days since Covid started (and they still look almost new!). I’m also eyeing these to mix it up a bit because I think they’re adorable: https://www.garnethill.com/mira-fuzzy-slides/shoes-accessories/new-arrivals/592280?listIndex=18&uniqueId=592280
Cindy,
Those ARE adorable – go for it’
I think many of you ladies would love this site, which is basically preppy New England everything, kind of a much cooler LL Bean. These slippers are really cute: https://kieljamespatrick.com/collections/womens-shoes/products/cozy-cabin-moccasins-womens
