In search of corduroy everything

24

This shirt dress comes in a few darker colors, but I like the idea of wearing this off-white one, with black tights and boots.

I’m very keen on J. Crew pants these days, and might just have to go for these easy boot cut jeans.

A cozy sherpa-lined jacket that’s also kind of retroish in a 70s way.

This bright blazer is a statement for sure—I dig how much the blue pops.

So tempted by these wide-leg cropped pants.

This patch pocket blazer from J. Crew is so good in this off-white (it comes in navy too).

A lightweight shirt jacket is a really excellent and versatile piece.

Just an easy pair of chinos that don’t cost a lot and come in a few good colors.

A sweet button-front skirt from Madewell.

This blazer has such excellent professor vibes.

Just the cutest bucket hat in the palest pink.

A super-chic trench that looks far pricier than it is.

A cute jumpsuit with lots of handy pockets.

This shirt could easily double as a jacket.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be nabbing this excellent popover.

And finally: an army pant in a really good khaki.

Since we are talking about corduroy everything, what about corduroy pillow cases? I hear they are making headlines! (Sorry! I couldn’t resist!)

I had just received the COS shirt dress in dark green and it runs extremely large. Sizing down as we speak. Very nice quality

This post takes me back to the plum-colored corduroy skirt I made in eighth-grade Home-Economics. What a classic! Thanks for the great post, Kim!

Kim, any opinion on the wide leg cords from Uniqlo? I can’t stop thinking about them.

Is it okay if I butt in? Those are very cute – they have a confusing returns policy though. (To me, anyway. I’m not even sure you can return online orders in the store. And, to me, 30 days is too short. I hesitate to order from them, which is too bad. They have a ton of cute stuff.)

Not only can you not return online orders to a Uniqlo store, you have to return an in-store purchase to the same store where you bought the item. Bad policies.

Oops. Jax just said all this, only better. But SHAME ON YOU UNIQLO!

I just encountered that returns policy change today!! I had no idea they changed it in 2020. I used to be able to return online purchases in store, and on top of it, they charge the shipping fee, which can be a disincentive for future purchases for me. Please also be aware that for in-store purchases or online purchases made in-store, you *have* to return those items to the original store location of the purchase transaction! So you will not be able to buy at one Uniqlo location and return an item to another location!! It’s RIDICULOUS: “All online orders placed on UNIQLO.com that were paid with Pay-In Store option must be returned back to the original UNIQLO Store location where the payment was completed. ” “Merchandise purchased in stores must be returned to the original purchase store location for a full refund to the original form of payment up to 30 days from the purchase date.” One exception is if you’re exchanging 1 item of the order, you can get your card reimbursed for other items on that same order, but it must be an exchange for the same item (different size or different color). RIDICULOUS. I’ve like the quality of Uniqlo for some basics, esp for my family, but I’m going to be very careful about purchasing from them, moving forward. I’m not sure why Japanese brands like Uniqlo and Muji have difficult policies.

I’ve just sent stuff that doesn’t fit back to them without a problem, and also have returned to the stores. I agree that 30 days is too short…

Excellent – you are much more organized than me! Also I could probably get better at ordering. Idk, lately I feel like I am sending almost everything back, maybe I would be better off just going in to the store.

Sorry but cropped cords just take me back to the middle school bus and that mean kid from across the lake who would torment me about my “flood pants”.

Is it just me or is J. Crew finally finding their footing again this season?

Have they fixed their sizing issues yet? I stopped buying from them because their sizing was just all over the place. I’d buy their jeans in my usual size and they would be way too small, while their dress pants in the same size were huge. I bought a coat in their smallest size, smaller than I’d normally order, and it was ridiculously oversized and unwearable. I have never had this problem with other stores the way I have with them.

Same here. I tried a sweater on and needed to go down a size to an M. I did lose a considerable amount of weight recently, but I haven’t been a size M since I was 2! Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take it for the psychologically deceptive boost, but I’m not a M.

Liz, I’ve had the same problem with them regarding size. Last year I ordered a pair of “slouchy” cords in my regular size and could barely pull them on much less button or zip so back they went for a larger size which was HUGE. My body just isn’t that weird so I gave up and sent them all back. At this point in my life when I order jeans/pants/anything for my lower half I order a size smaller, my regular size and a size larger. And I read the reviews. All of them. Always revealing.

I came to say the same thing. I really digging their jeans lately, in particular. Whereas Madewell, for me, has lost its luster. That corduroy trench is so chic! Pretty sure I had an exact dupe of that button front skirt back in the day. I’m also enjoying the variety of cuts available these days: the J Crew and Alex Mill blazers couldn’t be more different, but both are great and stylish right now, for different people, different occasions, different moods.

The Madewell corduroy shirt (aka jacket) comes in such a gorgeous green, but a close look at the website reveals side pockets, which is an immediate hard PASS. So sick of side seam pockets, which flap around and never lie smoothly and are extremely unflattering on just about everyone, esp in a thicker fabric like corduroy. Does one shirt really need FOUR pockets??

Hahaha! I was just thinking the same thing. It’s just one of the reasons it’s a pass for me on corduroy.

Thanks for the tip on styling the shirtdress. I have a similar one in black from COS and I’m always wondering which shoes/boots to wear with it.
