Fall preview: lightweight jackets

10

As I type this, it is morning and 67 degrees out in Sag Harbor, and the evenings are getting kind of crisp too, and all of this has put me in mind of new outerwear. This corduroy number has those two great front pockets, and a nicely slouchy fit.

This gauzey material is tailor-made for late summer.

Just a solid, classic denim jacket in a good wash.

I like the kind of preppy, tomboyish look of this cute varsity jacket (it also reminds me of stupidly pricey ones I covet by Yves Saint Laurent).

A super-versatile chore jacket that’s from L.L. Bean so it will likely last forever.

This white jacket will look fantastic on its own, or later, layered over a hoodie.

This lightweight quilted jacket is in my shopping cart, and I’m pretty sure I’ll pull the trigger. I also like this version.

A handy shirt jacket in a good navy blue.

And I’m pretty fond of this reversible quilted jacket, which has the sweetest tiny floral print.

I have two comments: These are all great picks. I DON’T NEED ANY MORE JACKETS!

I’d love a mid thigh length seasonless jacket that goes with cropped pants and dresses!

This post could not be more timely. But living in the SF Bay Area where our Sept & Oct are some of our warmer months, I’m still searching for the Holy Grail of the perfect Spring/Summer jacket. With our coastal climate, the windbreaker-element is critical. My wife has an old Birdwell Britches (sic) nylon front zip, hip-length jacket which was based on old surfing jackets. I covet it. But they don’t make them anymore and my searches for a replacement have been unsuccessful. I’m getting to that “I don’t care what it costs, I’ll wear it so much my PPU will be pennies” stage. Any & all suggestions gratefully received.

Are you sure they don’t make them any more? I bought masks from Birdwell back during the staying-at-home times and almost bought one of those jackets! Look: https://www.birdwell.com/collections/jackets

Aren’t those great? Yes—they make the competition jackets for men but they no longer offer them in their womens cut—which was a great cut. The men’s pattern is long and straight and not good for hips!

Oh, I was wondering about that, that’s always the issue with men’s jackets! Oh well.

Thanks, Elisabeth! I’d never heard of Birdwell, but you just solved some gift-giving woes I’d been having. Just ordered a hoodie for someone who is a 70s beach person at heart.

I have the quilted jacket from J Crew and love it! It’s super lightweight, pretty water proof, comfy and warm without being heavy. Highly recommend! Xo

I love a good varsity jacket. And I love that Alex Mill shirt jacket (super practical for Texas). I’m also feeling loads of hearts for the J.Crew quilted number (particularly in that burgundy!––but I would change out the buttons). Knocking them outta the park, Kim!
