Apologies for the absence of posts this week: I had an outpatient procedure Tuesday morning from which I thought I’d bounce right back, but it took a lot more out of me than I anticipated. Meanwhile, I thought I’d do a post on dresses in the hue I still wear more than any other, no matter the season. I just make certain to choose pieces that aren’t too form-fitting, in fabrics that breathe. I have wanted this pretty dress for some time now: it’s nicely feminine, but steers clear of being prissy.
A nifty shirt dress with a utilitarian vibe.
I dig the empire waist here.
A tiered dress with a lovely deep neckline.
This A-line dress from Cos is both polished-looking and easy.
A cool seersucker number with an extra-flowy cut.
I own and love this ruched dress from Veronica Beard, which is now offered in sizes up to 24.
I love that LoveShackFancy dress! I thought I was immune to that brand, but leave it to Kim to find a classic there. I go to a lot of wine tastings and wine parties and such, or I used to (they’re creeping back onto the calendar), and black is a must when red wine is in the picture. Yes, Wine Away works, but best to avoid the agita in the first place!
Hope you are feeling better and so glad you got to have the procedure!
Glad you are feeling better!! I think this counts as bouncing back.
summer goth forever!
Glad to hear you were able to have your procedure and very glad to hear you are feeling better. I do shy away from black these day, but a number of these dresses come in other colors. The utilitarian dress looks very RL safari in the tan. And the Veronica Beard comes in a nifty stripe . Excellent selection! I am hoping you’ll do a “what I’m packing” post before your upcoming tour! I always love those.
Interesting piece on fashion – thanks! I disagree that ideas come from the top though. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In fact I am not sure there is anything much that is really “new” – but, that’s been said before too. … … .. I remember that scene in the mean editor movie – thought it was b.s. at the time. People who need a sweater will usually pick one from what’s available – it doesn’t make the designer a god-like creature. … … … On the positive side, there seem to be fewer rules now, it’s kind of a free-for-all. Somewhere someone is wearing a round toe in a pointy toe season, and no one else is noticing. Wait! What if it’s me? Ha. And, that in theory leaves more room for these small batch folks. Hmm. … … … I actually kind of like a good puffy sleeve (shhhhh). It’s all in the execution. I will have to google those dresses she talks about – I don’t think I’ve seen them.
Oopsie, I think I put this in the wrong place. Sorry.
Hope you’re feeling better Kim. I have the Madewell black tiered dress. Super comfy, runs a bit large.
I’ve felt like black is a bit harsh on me lately but it’s not easy to let go of what’s always worked. My compromise is wearing black bottoms and switching out my black eyeliner for brown. I do love the LoveShackFancy (what a name!) dress though. Hope you’re feeling better soon, Kim!
Yeah, agreed. I try to do navy when possible. Black reads too harsh.
I very much want that very sexy, femme fatale-style Veronica Beard ruched shirt (interesting combination) dress, but $450 is too steep. I’ve been realizing that all my summer dresses are all black with 1 exception in dark navy, ahem. It’s not totally my fault — a lot of the dresses offered come in black, white/cream/beige, and pink or some sort of mild anemic green color. Not a lot of options. Tough to find something in a good sapphire blue or deep red (no tomato) or my HG, emerald or forest or teal green.
BTW, I really like the Gap version of the LoveShackFancy dress — both the white and black versions https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=856797022&cid=13658&pcid=13658&vid=1#pdp-page-content. I was tempted by it at first, but it’s not really my style (a tad too Reese Witherspoon — her style is great, but it’s not mine).
And thank you Kim for featuring lots of sleeved dresses. Nice change from the usual inescapable sleeveless everywhere else.
Jax, thanks so much for the link to the Gap dress, all sold out in black in the UK (and sadly not available in petite here), but I snagged the last white one! So hope it fits, it was marked down to about $48, bargain!
Wishing you luck! I’ve seen both in the store, both colors are lovely.
Sending you healing thoughts, my dear! Still blogging after surgery — that’s dedication:)
xo
I found that very Loveshack Fancy dress on poshmark last year and have worn it so many times – I love it. Funny, I also tried it in white and that version was a big no-go.
I also cut the elastic out of the back b/c it fit me strangely (I have an insanely high waist) and that made it just perfect. Totally recommend.
Oh, feel better soon, Kim!
I finally pulled the trigger on the Universal Standard black dress with the asymmetrical hem you’ve listed a couple of times before — I LOVE IT. I got the one with sleeves and now I’m irked that I have to wait for cooler weather to wear it!
I hope you’re feeling ok after your procedure, Kim. Take it easy.
Glad you are feeling better, Kim and also glad you took some time for yourself. I have tried that LoveShackFancy dress on and it is pretty fabulous. Keep waiting to find it on super sale. Gap made a knockoff this summer that I tried on but it was not good; bulky in the wrong places, heavy cotton material.
Oh, also, feel better, Kim! “Outpatient” isn’t always synonymous with NBD, so take your time.
Thank you for this post, so glad you’re on the mend.
I’m obsessed with the black sandals the model is wearing in the Nordstrom shirt dress link. Any idea what they are, Kim? I haven’t figured it out. Thanks!
Now I am curious too! Ecco, camper and a brand called Copenhagen have similar, but nothing the same. They arrrrre quite nice. Harrumph.
It makes me crazy when I get fixated and can’t find the actual item. Thanks for the suggested options, Viajera. I actually have a Camper sandal that’s not dissimilar, but I like the platform vibe on the ones in the picture.
