A party in a top, part 1

17

I have explained the concept of the party in a top many times, but for those of you just joining in: I realized a while back that at really big and crowded holiday-type parties, all anyone notices is what you’re wearing from the waist up. So all you really need to concern yourself with is procuring a really unstoppable top, and pairing it with anything from jeans to skinny pants to a flowy skirt, depending on how fancy the fête in question is. I like a party in a top that makes a statement but is still easy to wear, and this beaded and sequined tee certainly does that. It also comes in a very pretty pale pink.

I’d wear this sequined tank under a tuxedo jacket and with jeans.

The embellishment at the collar of this keyhole blouse elevates the whole look here.

A satin band-collar blouse that would be aces tucked into skinny black pants.

I think floral prints get so much more sophisticated against a black background, like this one does.

The knot front here is a cool little detail.

A sateen tee that’s nicely dressed down, for a more casual party.

This pleated iridescent top would make a big old statement at a dressed-up New Year’s Eve gathering.

The metallic heart print here is sweet without being overly twee.

An elegant Nili Lotan blouse that you could wear with just about anything, and that is currently marked down.

The lace sleeves here are sexy in a very subdued way.

Another marked down Nili Lotan top in an excellent zebra print.

This metallic mesh top would elevate whatever you paired it with.

A fun sequined tee—are you picking up that I’m feeling sequins at the moment?

This metallic button-down is the type of piece you could throw on and have an instant outfit.

Another pretty floral with a nice slouchy cut.

Kim, your Party in a top post always makes me wish I had a social life. Maybe it’s like “Field of Dreams”? “If I buy it, they (invitations) will come.” I’m loving the satin and sequins, but is velvet in anymore?

I always call this “restaurant dressing”. If you get all dressed up with great pants or a terrific skirt for a meal at a restaurant, ain’t nobody sees it! All the interest has gotta be above the waist!

I bought and returned the Vince top during Black Friday sales. It’s beautiful but was oddly short. But not short enough to be cropped. I am 5’7”. It will be perfect for someone petite. Maybe 5’3” and under.
Will be ordering the Velvet tee ASAP

Pop a bottle of champagne, it’s time for party in a top & in two parts!!! I am not invited to a fete this year (okay by me) so may have to get the lovely blue metallic button down to wear to the grocery store, and show all the ladies in their holiday/winter themed sweatshirts how to rock it like a GOACA.

Hold me back, that Vince pleated top comes with matching culottes that have an elastic waist and POCKETS. Now I just need to be invited to a flashy party… Also the sequined tank and sequined tee are both outstanding. And that first one!

Nice assortment. But I wonder, as I always do, would any work for someone with a G level chest?

Perfect! Love these, Kim. I’m finding shoes less and important as when I go out, chances are it’ll be in a restaurant where no one ever sees my footwear. I’ll spend more on my day to day shoes.

I look forward to this every year! Party in a top is like “TV newscaster goes to a party”. Thanks for all the good tops not in black, and not super revealing. Brings the attention to the face, where it belongs.

My 26 year old daughter and I were shopping this past saturday and she picked up a blouse and said “Look, Mom, a party in a top!” Kim, you’ve coined a fashion phrase. Love all the choices here!

I’ve been listing after that Velvet top (just the right amount of sparkle and glitter, and in my fave black color) ever since I saw it on Anthro’s site, but I cannot bring myself to pay $257 for something that is not a coat or a dress or a handbag.

I wish I could buy ALL of them! Alas, I’m not invited to that many parties!
