A party in a top, 2022 edition

10

For those of you who are new here, some explanation: years ago, I went to a crowded holiday party and noticed that it really doesn’t matter what you wear from the waist down because all most people notice is what you’ve got on from the waist up. So all you really need to do is find a really show-stopping top, and pair it with jeans or a nice pair of black skinny pants or a skirt—depending on the dressiness of the affair—and you’re set.  This snakeskin-print tulle top is an excellent case in point—I love the high neck, which I almost never do, and the sheer sleeves. It also looks pretty comfy, which isn’t not a consideration.

I kind of overdosed on sequins when they had their early-Aughts moment, but I’m really feeling them again, and this navy blouse is about as elegant as sequins can be.

This hot-pink sleeveless top is so fun and punchy, and would look great peeking out from under a blazer.

And here’s another top I’d like to see layered with a blazer, or even a cardigan.

Just a simple, chic button down silk blouse. I might wear it with a cami so I can unbutton it low, like it is here.

Sometimes, a loud shirt is just the ticket, and this one is so good without being too loud.

A kind of romantic-looking peasant top that would look amazing with a dark velvet jacket.

This sparkly top is so cool and graphic.

This sequin button down comes in a few good colors (click through to see) but something about this navy is really speaking to me.

Splurgy but so, so good: a velvet button-down with mesh panels.

And finally: here’s a good one with nicely subtle color and sparkle.

The multicolored velvet stripes fabric is verrrry appealing. I wonder how it was made. I expect the stripes must have been serged onto the mesh, but, anyhow it is lovely. I liked the navy sequined button down too. Big fun!

That navy button down is so beautiful! And if I were a peasant blouse wearing person that white one would be in my cart.

I feel so validated because that velvet striped top is already in my closet and the full price (that I so rarely cough up) has been giving me some heart burn . I got my Mom home from the hospital the night before Thanksgiving after a fall and broken rib and on Thanksgiving I day drank champagne and somehow ended up clicking buy on that top despite immense guilt about the price. I will wear it the first time this Friday and I was so glad to see it on this list, which I wait for every year. I plan to wear it a couple times for this season and hope it will last me a few good seasons. I love this post, Kim, and if I may, I would like to see it a bit earlier in the season. I went to two holiday celebrations last weekend and have more this weekend – so this post came just after when I needed to order anything to have in time. I am grateful for all you do. This blog and your podcast are some of the few treats I look forward to. Happy everything to you and the GOACA community!

I always love this post! Both Sequin tops are great and the multicolored velvet top took me back a million years to a dress I had that was similar so thanks for that too.

Party in a Top is my single favorites post m and this one is as stellar as ever! Love all the sequins, and agree that navy blue sequins are chic as all get out.

I love a loud shirt! Smart and original. The flora+fauna one has a matching scarf option and seems versatile enough for other uses. (i.e. Daytime professional, under a sweater or blazer or vest. Or even in the spring/summer with tailored shorts. Or at happy hour with navy cropped jeans and navy Converse sneakers.)

Highly attracted to the velvet stripe. Debating whether it’s timeless, that’s the only way I could (barely) justify the price

I actually went shopping yesterday, and I’m glad I did. I had been eyeing a J Crew sweater online, and the color turned out to be quite different IRL. Other colors I liked morrrre in person. So that was good. And the people I ran into at the mallll were mostly in good spirits, which was nice to see too. The gift I wanted to buy at Macys was mysteriously absent this year, but never mind, I’ll find some somewhere else. (I try to shop there bc I like the parade. And they sell my favorite bras.) … … … I hardly ever shop anymore and, it wasn’t so bad. I kind of enjoyed it I guess, even though I wore a stupid mask the whole time. (Whyyyyy hasn’t someone invented a comfortable one that works and doesn’t look like a gas mask!!???) (You know, maybe I complain too much. Like, how no one knows how to make a decent hot chocolate. Yeah, definitely too much whining. Must cut down!!) I am totally behind for the holidays but I will try to not talk about that. Must focus.

Velveteen pants are the perfect bottom for a party in a top. They’re plentiful this season, and could last many years if worn occasionally.
