These are just so much cooler than long-sleeved button-downs (rolled-up sleeves just feel bulky and hot to me come July) and I always crave good ones once summer starts really rolling. This utility shirt from Alex Mill comes in a few good colors, but I dig this classic khaki.
How cute is this pink gingham top? I’d toughen it up with a beat-up denim skirt.
The color combination on this Madewell shirt appeals, as does the fact that it looks great untucked, which is definitely a thing for me at the moment.
I just think this happy red terry cloth number is a delight.
The pale stripes on this seersucker shirt are a nice and subtle touch.
A cool denim shirt with a pleating situation in the back that makes it look pricier than it is. This is another one that’s great for untucking.
Something about the faded-out hue of this one is giving me a distinct summer preppy vibe.
The super-pale stripes here make this one an excellent starter piece if you want to wear pink but are also slightly afraid to.
And finally, this is a fantastic dupe for Nili Lotan’s much pricier—and eternally popular—Normandy shirt.
I was just thinking that I need a short sleeve button down shirt after watching The Talented Mr Ripley (again) and googling GP’s outfits. The Alex Mill in white could be just the right thing. So thanks, Kim!
And now I really want this ombré Iinen version even though I definitely do not need more of these.

Everlane has a linen workwear shirt that is just aces. I bought two, and they’re excellent. Light, breezy linen; two big front pockets; great fit. The orange one is so lovely and might be the first orange item I own?
The Alex Mill terry cloth number is SO GOOD in person! I have it in navy and struggle not to wear it every day, it’s one of those better-than-basic all stars.
Isn’t terrycloth super-hot and unbreathable though? At least that’s what I remember from my childhood…doesn’t exactly seem summer-friendly.
The Alex Mill terry cloth set is making me nostalgic for all the different terry cloth pieces I had in 80s childhood — terry cloth summer dress with elastic waist, terry cloth t-shirt with piping in the hem, terry cloth shorts. Love this set and that red, very tempted!
The Alex Mill utility shirt (maybe in white) and the Rails NL dupe are PERFECT!
I love these shirts but as an XL pear shape I think they are just too short in length (for me). Always feel better if things are a bit longer…..
I have been living in those Madewell Beachside shirts (untucked) this summer. I have four—all of them are the gauzy fabric they call Lightspun.
I love that Madewell striped shirt but have two questions for anyone who has worn that style: is it too boxy to successfully tuck in? And are the sleeves as short as they are on the model? I’d prefer them to reach almost to the crook of the elbow, which maybe they do on someone who isn’t 5’10” as pictured. Any info would be much appreciated.
It’s pretty boxy. I haven’t tried to tuck it in. And I guess the only way you could get the sleeves or length longer is to size up. I’ve actually got those shirts now in medium, large, and XL based on what was available, and they all fit but of course differently. It’s an oversized shirt but I’d suggest sizing up anyway if you want to tuck and want the sleeves longer.
I was in looooove with the pink gingham until I read that it’s 100% linen. I 100% look like a winkled mess in linen.
I also liked those … though I wondered if they were also pjs. More of a feature for me. Cute though for sure.
You know how one opens the refrigerator and stands there staring into it thinking if you stare long enough something delicious will appear? I stood in front of my closet this morning thinking if I stood and stared long enough a new short sleeved shirt would appear because it is too hot and too HUMID to wear anything that clings to any part of my body unnecessarily (like a tee shirt) and I’ve already worn this week the two short sleeved button downs that I own which are now in the laundry. Obviously, this posting won’t solve my what-to-wear dilemma this morning, but it will be of tremendous help for my future! The Alex Mill, the Madewell and the Frankies Bikinis pink gingham will do nicely, thank you very much.
CW, The standing in front of the closet thing, I call it looking for a “surprise” outfit. Meanwhile, at my place, I’m trying to remember if I took my vitamins this AM.
Denim shirt is en route. I’m not a button down fan but love the look with the olive green pants and am envisioning wearing the heck out of it as a summer substitute for a denim jacket.
Great idea on the substitute for a jacket. Love the Madewell stripe as well.
That denim shirt is fantastic. I’d pull the trigger but I purchased HOKAS yesterday because of all the raves here (and the flowered VANS) (hides face).
Kimbersam, I’m having one of those weeks, too! My wallet is glad tomorrow is “Links” day.
Kim France (and the GOACA community) need to be less excellent at shopping for us 😉
Aw thanks, kimbersam! And thanks to you too for your always-entertaining commentary.
i will go google what is Links day … anyhow, people, it is good for the economy. I pay you, you pay them, they pay me …? Those vans were totally lovely. Kim has converted me to Liberty. (well I don’t know that I’d heard of it before much – I was never anti-)
Oh, you mean the social group? Them I have heard of. I didn’t know there was a day though. Right on! (I thought it sounded like an internet thing … ooopsie)
No – I meant Kim’s Friday Links (usually nothing to buy)!
oh duuuuuuuhhhhh … what a space cadet I am! Thanks for explaining…
Mine just arrived yesterday and they are SO. Damned. Comfortable.
