15 cute summery sneakers

47

So I started wearing sneakers pretty much exclusively during Covid—first because, like everyone else, I couldn’t be bothered with “hard” shoes, and secondly because of my bad knee. I was diagnosed with a torn meniscus, which appears miraculously to have healed itself (which I understand sometimes happens) but even now, when it doesn’t hurt  to wear anything clog-like or heeled, I find I still want to be wearing sneakers most of the time. I might even try to pair them with dresses this summer, which is a trick I’ve never felt like I was able to pull off, and these Chuck Taylors—in pale millennial pink—would be perfect for that. Also, if you like Chucks but don’t love how branded they are, you might want to try these.

Of course I always love a platform sneaker, as long as it isn’t overly clunky—and this slip-on pair from Seavees is just un-clunky enough to clear the bar.

The heather gray here is pretty chic—it reminds me of Missoni spacedye.

OK, I’m not certain I could pull off these Liberty of London Vans, love them though I do, but surely one of you could?

And if you like the idea of Vans Old Skools, but in a solid, you could go for this pair—it comes in several other colors, but I do love this red.

The hit of red on these Puma platforms is a nice, graphic touch that really makes them pop.

I know black sneakers are not the most summery thing in the world, but I’ve got these Nike Air Forces in my shopping cart even as I type. If you like the shape of these but not the shade, check out this colorful pair.

You can’t get a lot more classic than Stan Smiths, and I like that these have the original green tab.

These are fun and retroish, and I how excellent is that blue?

I just really how subtle and clean-lined this New Balance pair is.

I don’t just love white sneakers—not for others, but definitely for me, as I feel they give me clown feet. So I dig this Madewell pair because they’re appealingly light-colored, but not too light.

And for an altogether preppy vibe, how about these Tretorns?

The faded-out navy on these slip-ons is just so good, and they also look desperately comfortable.

This bright pair from Brazilian brand Veja is partially sold out, but I had to include them because the color combination is just aces.

Of course I love these Onitsuka Tigers because they’re such a good mustard yellow, but also because the green laces are an unexpected (but welcome) touch.

My 2 cents for the day (you get what you pay for): 1. Veja’s are cute but horribly uncomfortable. 2. Nike Air Force One’s are cute but are very stiff & if you’ve got big feet, be prepared to have them look HUGE. 3. Chucks are adorable, but has anyone figured out how to do arch support in them? 4. Sneakers are life!

The new Chuck 70 with thicker soles have better arch support. I just got a pair.

Per the non-branding-ness … Global Exchange used to make sneakers, a long time ago, a kind of a fair trade effort, and I was waiting for them to make them in white, which afaik didn’t happen. Last time I looked, muji didn’t have any reviews up. I don’t know if I wear sneakers anymore, but, the simple ones do beckon.

Just purchased two pairs of sneakers – these Everlane ones: https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-court-sneaker-white-mustard?collection=womens-tread-sneakers and I’m waiting on these to come in the mail later today (on sale!): https://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/p/soludos-shooting-star-embroidered-leather-sneakers-prod144470068. Hoping the second pair is a homer, they look so cheery! Will make the decision on which to keep after both have arrived.

Ohhhh, just snagged a pair of the ones from BG – they had a size 5 left, that never happens. Thanks!

This post is right up my alley. I am a dress/skirt & sneakers girl all the way!! I own Chuck T’s in red, blue, black, white & pink. The slip ons (that look like lace-ups) are the absolute best. My feet skew more narrow which I think is required for Chucks, tho.

    Wide sizes?

Why is it now not OK to do a clothing post without extended sizes, but a shoe post without them is considered just fine?

I do sympathize with you. At the same time, it is in my view still “okay” to do a clothing post without extended sizing, simply because otherwise, we would be stuck looking at the same two companies all day long (so to speak). I am more of a lookeeloo here anyway – I am very picky, not a sample size, and rather tightfisted to boot. It is still fun to hang out! … … … Of course, it is preferable to offer a wider range. It is all very frustrating but change takes time. I think things are moving in the right direction – it’s just slow. The good thing is, lots of people come through here, and maybe some of them will have heard of good wide-shoe options they can suggest to you. I too will try to keep an eye out, myself – bc, now I am curious…

I love the look of Veja, but came here to mention Hoka. Amazing support and comfort while offering Cotopaxi-like color combos if the gray or black don’t inspire.

To the extent I wear sneakers at all, they’re Hokas. Most others just don’t provide the support even with an orthotic. I used to think they looked absurd, but then I was in France and saw them twice on typically well-turned out French women and changed my opinion entirely. (Sadly, I had not brought my Hokas on that trip, thinking them too ugly. Instead I took a vastly less comfortable pair that went straight to Goodwill when I got home. My bad.)

Stephanie, I think it was your comment on this blog last year that inspired me to get my first pair of Hokas. I remember the “they wear them in France!” endorsement. I’ve been very happy with my pair, in a comparatively subdued dark blue pinstripe. I’m less tempted by fashion-y sneakers that I can’t wear for miles of walking (Veja, Converse, Puma, even some New Balance and some Nikes). I *might* consider a pair of Cariumas as dress-up sneakers to wear with skirts & dresses … but I might also continue to be my dorky, comfy, clompy-shoed self in all circumstances.

Will look into Hokas! Thanks, all of you. From reviews, I am seeing some of the usual problems (“wide” is not really wide, toe box too small, etc.), but hopefully there is a pair of them that might work. It is really hard to find wide shoes that are at all cool looking.

I have those liberty print Vans! I love them. I found them, oddly, at an outlet a few years ago. They are not an every day shoe, at least for me but for certain spring and summer days they are exactly the right thing.

And this tennis shoe post is great. Right now I’m still mostly wearing some kind of tennis shoe or a summer hued Birkenstock

LoveShackFancy (whose pastel, flouncy dresses remind me of ornate cupcakes) partnered with Superga, recently. Lace, laces, high and low top. Cute, but last I looked mostly sold out. Also, colorful AF1s are so, so good and I’ve had the grey NBs in my cart on and off for a few months.

I was very drawn to the LoveShackFancy collab to add to my Superga collection, but couldn’t find them in my size. They reminded me so much of a pair of pink floral patchwork high tops (Betsey Johnson) I had in the late 80s.

YES! They do have a Betsey vibe. I still pine for some of my ’80s wardrobe. I asked my mother to store specific pieces and she gave them to my younger sister, who thought they were cool and kept them.

My current life is lived in sandals and sneakers and I don’t see that changing anytime soon so this post is lovely. I spied those Liberty of London vans the other day and did wonder if I could pull them off. Still on the fence. Some truly great choices here. Outstanding post. Grateful I am credit-card-less or I’d be in deep trouble! I will put in a plug for the brand Hoka ––these are not attractive, but the best walking sneakers I’ve found. I wear the Bondi 7. They are very popular in Austin for some weird reason––college girls wear them everywhere––not that THAT should be a recommendation by any means!!

They are probably popular in Austin because they did a collab with Outdoor Voices – which is partly headquartered there.

I *love* Hokas so much, they have been an absolute game changer as I’ve gotten older. I was a lifelong distance runner, but gave it up bc of pain in my hips, back and feet. With Hokas I’m back to my distance running (but on the treadmill in the AC at the moment). They are like wearing anti-fatigue mats. It probably looks like that too, to some people, but I’ve gotten used to the way they look, I guess — like any other platform style as far as I’m concerned. Hokas for life!

I just went to the Hoka website to see what you guys are all on about and the first thing I thought was that they look like something a Brooklyn hipster girl would wear! Seriously, those cushion-y, platform-y sneakers are trendy with the younguns right now. I say if you need the squish factor, embrace it – they might look ugly to us olds but that’s all subjective anyway (and honestly I have to agree with V here, I think they’re cute).

I have a pair of the Liberty of London Vans in a slightly different print and, GOCAs, you can totally pull them off. I’ve been wearing them with jeans, of course, and they also look fresh and fun with a simple dress. As with all Vans, the insoles are glued in, so if you need orthodics, you will need to layer them on top of the insole. It works just fine.

I am loving all these comments. Hokas, which I may have tried because of the comments here, didn’t work so well for me. I have found that men’s New Balance 880s are my shoe (I am a women’s 11). I would love to see a feature on sneakers and shoes that really work for walking and for people with knee (and other) issues. These are all perfectly cute, but I get knee pain and shin splints if I walk too long in anything like these….

Glad to see other readers who are *blessed* with bigger feet! I’m an 11 (was 10.5 before kids) and am too self conscious about whether shoes make my feet look huge. Sneakers are a particular issue for me, as I find it hard to find sneakers that don’t! I have a pair of black Supergas that do a good job, but this thread has me thinking I may want to expand my horizons. Being able to walk for miles in comfort is my top priority, with cute/cool factor in second.

I wear a woman’s size 12, which is frustratingly hard to find. Hokas didn’t quite work for me either, despite trying and returning three pairs, but my husband fell in love with his pair and I have friends who walk several miles daily and they love Hokas. I finally found some supportive, comfy sandals for summer from Clarks — the Cloud Steppers line. Still working on finding cute sneakers with some arch support.
