Most years, doing a denim skirt post is a colossal pain, because most of them are minis, and the ones that aren’t can skew frumpy. But there is—at least compared to past seasons—a veritable bumper crop of cute ones right now, and I’m especially enamored of this retroish APC number.
The white buttons on this black denim skirt pop nicely.
The slit here makes this one a little daring, but the length keeps it safe.
I really dig this well-priced burnt orange option.
And the asymmetrical hemline here is a cool and nicely subtle touch.
The extra-high waist on this one from Veronica Beard intimidates me a little, but I think it could be really flattering and sexy on.
This patch pocket skirt is just like something my mom might have worn in the 70s.
I don’t usually like maxi-length anything, but this is really graceful.
From Madewell: a white zip-up choice with a (near) universally flattering A-line shape.
I’d wear this pencil skirt with my most worn-in white button-down and a belt like this, for a low-key preppy look.
And I really like this faded-out option too.
Petite person with no torso here hoping the high-waist trend goes away soon.
I was in love with this silhouette a few years back ad I see its coming back again!! Great picks!

That black denim with the white buttons is something else!!
I made a skirt out of jeans in 1984 not unlike that last option. Props to my sewing teachers: mom, Brownies, 4H and rural NH high school home economics.
Many of these are quite cute … but, are denim skirts an East Coast thing? Not that there’s anything wrong with that – they are just sort of not on my radar. Mind you, maybe it’s me? Well I will keep an eye out today and count how many I see. Also jumpsuits, just bc they’re fun to look at.
So, in case anyone cares … when I was out on Friday, I saw two … two! … pairs of floral pattern pants. One was a MC Hammer style, and the other was more of a palazzo. Bot prints were on the large side with a lot of negative space, and with color backgrounds (ie not black or white background).
I actually liked the prints. I deem this a worthy trend, if it is one.
I am sorry to say, I also saw an equal number of denim “diapers.” Why??????? Just wear normal shorts?! Oh well. I was at a place that attracts lots of tourists – the Huntington Library. Which reminds me, I once saw a reeeeally fabulous jumpsuit there, with a big print of two large birds on the back, maybe a mirror image print … ha, I wonder if I am running into the same person? Some type of silky fabric. I really appreciated it.
What is great about all these options is how incredibly comfortable they look. Like you woke up paired one with your favorite tee before you bicycled your way to the farm stand for summer veggies. I’d be happy to wear any of them––except the burnt orange one because I live in Austin and it’s just toooooo spot on for UT’s colors. ugh.
Thanks for the intro to the APC skirt – am in LOVE!
Love your blog… and look forward to your book!
A HUGE fan in Montreal, Canada.
I like movement in my clothes, so I’ve never felt comfortable in a denim skirt – especially not a pencil skirt – because of the heavy fabric and also, don’t you find that it snakes it’s way up your torso and pretty soon, it’s on sideways?
I thought I was the only one that happened to. Maybe it’s body type and fabric.
Exactly! Add in a front slit, and sitting comfortably also becomes impossible.
