20 pretty tops that ring in under $100

chloe & katie top

I really looked hard for tops that very much don’t look like they cost under $100, and was pleased to find so many, all of which I hope you like. This blouse has so much going for it: a nice deep neckline, cool, subtle print, and satisfyingly over-long sleeves.

topshop origami top

This origami top is not left in a lot of sizes, but I think it’s so lovely and sculptural—and looks so much more pricey than it is—that I had to include it.

madewell tunic popover

Just a good, crisp, white popover for throwing on when you want to feel pulled-together.

vince camuto top

I like how the sleeves on this blouse are kind of sweet and romantic, but the rest of the top is nicely streamlined.

eloquii top

This is actually made of t-shirt material, but it looks much fancier, and is definitely work-worthy.

& other stories top

I don’t usually dig a high-neck blouse, but this is so chic, and feminine too.

birdie mixed media top

A simple flowy top for throwing on whenever.

madewell plaid popover

If you like plaid shirts but aren’t so crazy about button-downs, this popover might be the answer.

mango printed tee

This t shirt looks appealingly like a kimono.

madewell flannel shirt

A cozy flannel shirt with graphic black and white stripes.

allsaints isabel top

I’d wear this camisole top under a blazer on a date.

j crew boy shirt

I have an army green shirt exactly like this one and wear it endlessly.

eloquii pintuck top

Pintucks give this a put-together feel.

velvet top

The ruffle neck here is nice and subtle, and I love the red.

& other stories button down

A good blouse for layering under a V-neck sweater.

topshop knot front blouse

This tie-front top comes in black and army green too, but I think this so-subtle shade of pink is quite pretty.

bp perfect shirt

Give me stripes any old time.

eloquii contrast bow blouse

OK, the print of this blouse is on the loud side, but I think if you wore it under a blazer or sweater and only part of it was visible, it would be great.

nydj blouse

This is the kind of top that doesn’t make the hugest statement, but goes with everything.

mango bow sleeve blouse

And finally: a brilliant, vivid green bow-sleeve top.

If you missed it last week, here is a post on colorful, happy tops to combat the winter blahs.

21 dresses with grown-up hemlines

Elizabeth and James sweater dress

I was surprised to note that the last time I brought you dresses with grown-up hemlines was early September: an update is clearly in order. Some dresses here are on the lighter side and not what you might intuitively think about wearing this time of year, but all things are possible with layering: try a long-sleeved tee or turtleneck layered under, wear a full slip for added warmth, and pair with cardigans and tailored jackets and you’re good to go. I like how easy this is, and that it’s got a nicely relaxed cut.

carven sweater dress

And I’m always a fan of dresses that look like separates, as this does.

toit volant dress

I’d either wear a slip or a long-sleeved tee under this to make the neckline a little less plunging.

Joseph shift dress

OK, this is a very spring-y dress, but it could be made suitable for now with matte tights and a nice cardigan. I just love that green.

ALC dress

The twist at the bustline here is so becoming and I dig the asymmetrical hem.

which we want dress

A sweet (but not too sweet) and feminine floral.

public school dress

Another dress that looks pretty spring-y, but would be suitable for now with a little layering. A good choice for days when you really want to break out of the winter doldrums.

Giada Forte dress

Click through and check out the print on this splurgy option: it’s just so pretty .

Farrow Charlotte dress

So flattering and feminine: I like when the waistline is nice and high like it is here.

michel studio dress

The scoopneck here nicely highlights the collarbone—an almost universally flattering spot.

Dries Van Noten dress

This pretty velvet Dries Van Noten dress with is marked way down.

Xirena Leighton dress

I just think this is a fun print.

knot sisters dress

Reasonably priced, bright, poppy, and as good now as it will be in a few months.

farrow dress

The ruching here is what makes this such a figure-friendly (and even forgiving) dress.

city chic dress

This is pretty sexy, but at the same time not too much. Would look amazing with a leather jacket.

vince shirtdress

A shirtdress in an alluring dark floral.

stelen zora dress

This just looks so comfortable, and really elegant too (here it is in grey, which I also like).

vince side slit dress

I like the generous (but not perilous) side slit here.

farrow floral dress

I’d wear a shrunken leather jacket with this lovely dark floral.

Cornejo zuri dress

I’m not the biggest fan of the cold shoulder, but Maria Cornejo somehow always makes it work (and here is a cold shoulder dress in extended sizes that I quite like).

stelen farina dress

Another good asymmetrical hem, which works well because the rest of this dress is pretty straightforward.

17 colorful, happy tops to beat the winter blahs

I’m going to try layering tops like these under a sweater or blazer for a little blast of springtime color—it’s the type of thing that puts a little spring in my step when it’s early and freezing out and the dogs need walking. I am suddenly crazy for yellow, and am dying for this Ulla Johnson top (here is a cheaper yellow top I also like, and, here is one in extended sizes.)

the great top

I just really like the blue and black embroidery here.

mango ruched blouse

The ruched detail on this top makes it standout, as does the cobalt blue. It’s pretty cheap, too.

mango red top

A really solid lipstick red on the type of top that you’d turn to again and again.

veronica beard top

You definitely need a cami for this, but I think it’s so pretty.

zadig tunic

I adore the print here, as well as the slouchy cut.

mango pink top

And here’s a rather more vivid pink.

Screen Shot 2018-01-20 at 1.42.01 PM

The striped detail on the sleeves is a fun contrast with the floral print.

eloquii tunic

This looks so easy and comfortable.

mango ruffled top

The tie-neck here is both polished and a little bit sexy.

topshop top

This is quite polished too, and sophisticated as well.

eloquii red top

Another good red.

tamis shirt

I’m pretty sure this is a Liberty print, but I’d like it even if it wasn’t—the color is just so good.

sea top

A slightly hippie girl top, cut in a way that makes it come off more sleek than crunchy.

topshop lace top

This seems like an excellent date night option.

warm tunic

The other color I’m liking right now in addition to yellow is green, and this floral tunic just kills me.

mango purple top

I like this purple floral styled just the way they’ve done it here, with a black turtleneck. But it’d look pretty great on its own, too.
