- All of the delayed movies of 2020, ranked by their trailers. (The Ringer)
I looked at all of the trailers and all I could think was So. Many. Dudes. It’s as if women are about 13% of the population. And they’re all white. All those movies that didn’t come out in 2020, whatever. They can stay gone. I’ll take my viewing/paying eyeballs elsewhere.
Hmmm… maybe I counted differently. 16 of the 29 movies featured either a woman and/or a POC lead (a few of them co-leads with white males, granted, but still real leads). Yes, I included F9 because Vin Diesel self-identifies as a POC. I also counted the Ryan Reynolds because it looks like he co-stars with Taika Waititi and Jodie Comer. I don’t think that’s too bad. Of course, progress can definitely be made on making more movies with women as the leads or sole leads.
You may have outdone yourself here, Kim. I’ve a feeling I’ll be sneaking lots of short reading “breaks” today.
I agree, Ella Emhoff was the winner! Fit her like a glove.
This list of links left me feeling really happy. God what a wonderful departure from the onslaught of gaslighting and crimes. I’ve read (maybe here?) that Trump’s continual vomit of appalling news is likened to a siren blasting right next to our ears for four long years. The siren has suddenly been turned off and though our ears are still ringing, we can suddenly hear the beauty of silence and normalcy once again.
This is the strangest thing…I go to your website every morning…it’s my favorite part of my morning routine. For weeks and weeks, the last post I could see was the one you made right before Christmas. I was so worried and scared that you had stopped posting. And then today…BOOM! I can see everything since your return on Jan. 4th. I’m posting mainly to ask if this happened to anyone else? On a positive note, I just poured a huge cup of coffee and I’m going to have the best time catching up.
I’ve noticed I need to clear my cache for this site every few weeks, or the same thing happens to me.
Thank you so much for this tip! I just googled how to do it, and it was very simple.
I watched all of Bling Empire last night. It’s very quick and bingable, especially while my husband and kids are playing Ps5.
The public art at the boarder wall really moved me. Thanks, Kim.
Great links, thanks.
That’s rich that Vogue is discovering plus sizes. How many models over size 8, let alone size 18, have appeared in the print version in the last year? (And while I thought Elizabeth Suzann was interesting, it wasn’t particularly size friendly.)
I enjoyed the article on Black and Asian women reactions on Kamala being Vice President. Can i share how i, as a white non Christian felt about this election…WOW, finally we finally realized the legacy of JFK, he is no longer the only Catholic president, but is now really the 1st, and it only took us 60 years…and the fact the Kamala Harris husband is Jewish, yes, i get that he is not an elected official, but still, it makes me well good. And makes me, as a non Christian feel that i to have a place. I hope feeling continues…
So many excellent links! And yes, we love our CW! The bubble wrap portraits are so on-point for our times, the Bernie memes are hilarious (!!!), and the pink see saws are giving me life.
If Vogue put Bernie on the cover, I might read it again. Having said that, I guess I should also check out the VP issue too.
Having no one else really to complain to … ahem. I am not sure I like the tradition of having celebrity singers at these events. I don’t care for the pressure to “individualize” traditional songs in ways that don’t really move the ball forward musically. Just my two cents. Maybe that was to get millenials to watch? I liked the nurse way way better. … … Also, personally, I don’t need to watch people walk down stairs. Really I don’t. And, it adds a really stupid kind of pressure. … … Also, I have to admit, I really really liked the caftan that other person wore getting off the plane in Florida. Thank you, Florida!! Way to take one for the nation. And we love you for it. Please try to keep them there by all legal means. Should I not have said that?
Hi there, it’s Roxane Gay, with only 1 “n”. It’s something she often corrects others on, so just wanting GOACA to be on the good list for this.
Thanks for the heads up, TK.
I have an open-ended question for everyone. When we were watching Pretend It’s A City, they featured a photo of Fran Lebowitz in her sweater-wearing years. I hadn’t seen that photo in a long while and I burst out, “What a beautiful woman!” For that matter, I think she still is beautiful in her white shirt and cufflinks. My question is, do y’all think Fran Lebowitz would mind being described as beautiful? I’ve known enough beautiful women held hostage by their beauty to be mindful of these concerns. Plus, despite the way our culture is set up, not everyone’s end goal is being beautiful. Maybe, Fran Lebowitz prefers to be described as stylish and witty, which she is. Is it okay to speak of her beauty?
i love this question. being beautiful is not everyone’s end goal but who wouldn’t be pleased? if anyone didn’t care it would be Fran, but I’m still guessing she would be pleased.
but to your point, is it ok to speak of her beauty? i think so. but I bet many would disagree.
whew. that was long winded.
and isn’t it touching how Scorsese adores her?
If someone mentioned that I used to be so beautiful, I’d have to assume that this was no longer the case. Please don’t tell me that I used to be beautiful. Although I can’t speak for Fran.
As I said before, she continues to be beautiful. I don’t make the mistake of conflating youth with beauty.
I am not a Fran scholar. But she seems fairly irritable (one of my favorite qualities in any person). So, I’m going to guess “yes,” she might mind. … …. I love questions like these.
My daughter told me yesterday that I need to watch Bling Empire and compared it to Selling Sunset (also on Netflix)–the kind of reality show where no one is particularly likeable and yet you can’t stop watching it. π
Yes, thank you C.W. for that Guardian article- all the info I was looking for.
and Roxanne Gay says it perfectly.
Roxane.
