Friday links

embroidery art

  • Artist Michelle Kingdom creates quite evocative little universes with embroidery. (Colossal)
  • A fun little rundown of 101 things to love about New York City. (Curbed)
  • One of my all-time favorite bands is Pavement, so I enjoyed this short film on their lead singer, Stephen Malkmus, and his current band, the Jicks. (Dangerous Minds)
  • I have read a couple of pieces by Molly Ringwald lately that I’ve liked: this one is a smart reconsideration of John Hughes in the age if #metoo, and this one is about growing up in the same town as the Golden State Killer. (New Yorker, Dame)
  • Seven women on their unconventional mother figures. (Elle)

That Molly Ringwald piece on John Hughes is fantastic. I especially appreciated this line:

“She had to have a feeling about it, rather than a thought, because thoughts are things we have when we are conscious, and she wasn’t.”

    Thanks for sharing this, Kim.

Isn’t it great that someone like Molly Ringwald turns out to be so much more than Pretty In Pink?

    Michelle Kingdom’s kingdoms are superb.

The seven women and their seven stand-in mothers is so uplifting even though most stem from such tragedies.

Great string of links to get us through Friday!

Thanks for the flashback to “The In-laws.” It’s a family favorite and about once a year or so, one of us will shout “Serpetine, Shel, Serpentine!” Nice to know that someone else enjoys it too!

Maybe there’s more to embroidery than Home Ec cross-stitch aprons.

Thanks for the links Kim. Loved the articles by Molly Ringwald – I find it so gratifying that #MeToo has changed the lens through which we now view things.
Also, Pavement is amazing! My husband and I had never heard of them and we have been playing their music all weekend. New favourite. Thanks!
