CW–Sarah Polley got it right!!
Absolutely, YES, DawnE. In the Oscar photos of Sarah Polley she looks comfortable, is able to move and is every bit as elegant as anyone else. And I’m not saying you can’t achieve this in a dress––Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh both looked beautiful and comfortable and elegant.
Before I say anything about a particular Oscar dress I have to say I admire Florence Pugh’s acting abilities hugely (even if Amy did burn Jo’s manuscript which I STILL can NOT get over). And I believe she is quite beautiful with an excellent attitude toward the world. I like to DVR the red carpet entrances to the Oscar’s then play it later without sound so I don’t get anyone’s opinion about dresses and can form my own san influencers. When I saw Ms. Pugh’s dress my first thought was, “Someone was not in her corner to allow that dress to walk out the door.” Much later I read a comment online about the dress looking like an overstuffed comforter in a nice neutral taupe like the one currently on the writer’s bed. Even later I happened upon a brief red carpet “interview” with Ms. Pugh in which she seems as uncomfortable in the dress as I imagined her to be, referencing the “very short shorts” under the dress more than once and looking like she was tired of carrying her comforter around all evening. Why women are supposed to swan around with a comforter slung around their shoulders wearing impossibly high heels while men get to wear sleek tuxedos and flat shoes I will never understand. Whew! Sorry, I just had to get that out there. Have a great weekend, everyone and Thank You, Kim for gifting us so many links!!
I rather liked that outfit, but I didn’t realize it was uncomfortable to wear. That’s a shame – if one gets to go to the Oscars, it ought to at least be a good time, with so much effort going into the prep.
It is fun to look through these photos. Imo, Ruth Carter blew everyone else away. Which is no surprise, given what she does. They should just let her dress everyone there? Now *that* would be something. … … … Loved the purple color of the gown on Bassett. I thought Monae’s outfit was almost great, but not. … … … I don’t like the overuse of transparency, and I do not want to almost see someone’s bits – when is that trend going away? … … … I must say I don’t agree with the NYT’s choice of photos – I wonder if there is some weird kind of legal thing that influences these choices? None of the men here are in outfits I like that much, whereas, on the show, there was at least one colorful jacket I liked. I feel like there are a few standouts missing, but I can’t remember them either, so.
I sure wish I read faster. How are you guys getting through so many books? Also, I haven’t read the friends piece yet. Thanks for the links, Kim!
That’s funny, I just read this substack on related question: https://pandorasykes.substack.com/p/but-how-do-you-read-so-much
How does one get through so many books? Avoiding Sisyphean tasks like cleaning. Hearkening back to my great grandmother (first grade teacher and avid reader), the women in my family follow the tradition of stuffing things into closets right before company comes. Now, my great grandmother was a farmer’s daughter in rural Mississippi in the early twentieth century. So, she knew HOW to clean, but she also knew BETTER than to spend her reading time doing so.
now there’s a rule i need to remember . thank you.
Agreed, y.k.! Hmm I may need to needlepoint this onto something. Thanks again, D.!! You’re the greatest!
Lovely people, thank you for watching Party Down!
