Polo shirts and sweaters suddenly look really cool

14

Here we have the ever-stylish Ines de la Fressange (check out her excellent Uniqlo line here) styled precisely how I think polos look best: paired with slouchy pants, layered necklaces, and maybe an armful of bangles too.  They’re not the most inherently cool item, so you’ve got to raise the cool factor yourself, with accessories, and taking care to pair them with less obviously preppy pieces (Ines’s chinos are preppy, sure, but the color is so unexpected that it works).

This top comes in a multitude of colorways, but I like this blue and white striped number best.

This Lacoste top is about as classic as it gets, and I like the contrasting white buttons.

A metallic top that’d be great under a cardigan.

I like the subtle cable-knit details and contrasting stitching on this Rag & Bone specimen.

And I love the oversized silhouette and spread collar here.

This ribbed sweater is made of ultra-light merino wool, and I love the blue. I’d wear it next to my skin, or layer it over a long-sleeved tee.

A cute rugby shirt from Kule that reminds me of one I had in the 80s from Benneton.

This one from J. Crew has a nice easy fit, and I like the slightly oversized buttons.

Isn’t this one kind of fun and retroish-looking?

A short-sleeved sweater in a nice creamy hue.

I showed you this cashmere sweater last week in black, but this watermelon-y hue is pretty good too.

I’d wear this merino wool piece as a cardigan with a flowy dress.

I’m always down for preppy chic but I can’t do anything fitted or fully tucked in these days. But I happily found my inner prepster in a classic rugby from Rowing Blazers. In a zippy croquet stripe, no less. It’s made for men, so size accordingly per their online chart, and enjoy the thick cotton goodness of this rugby (one of many that Rowing Blazers carries).

I love black polos on either gender. However, Ines de la Fressange could be wearing a trash bag and look great (she’s like 5’11’ and weighs what, 10 kilos? ). I think wearing clothes that one feels good in makes the difference. Her accessories nail that outfit. Inez could be thinking to herself : “Ze podcast “Everything Is Fine” is so funee yet erudite! It has ze Je Ne Seis Quoi zat I have been craving! Merci Kim France!!”

I was feeling nostalgic for the J Crew men’s rugby shirt that I wore in college so I found one on ebay. It’s even called the 1985!

It’s official: My brain is going through its own “Being John Malkovich” moment. Except substitute Kim France. Suddenly, polo sweaters are everywhere and while I haven’t looked at one in years, I have had several of these very specimens sitting in various carts all over the web for at least a few days! Does this mean I’m developing taste? 😉

I bought that Lacoste shirt a few years ago. It looks so cool on the model, but I looked like I worked at Dunkin Donuts in it. I think you’re totally right about the accessories. I’m too cheap to buy nice jewelry. By the way, a post on affordable accessories would be awesome. It’s so hard to come across nice jewelry these days for under $150 unless you’re willing to spend hours searching Etsy .

She is just so chic, always want to take a page from her book (and literally, have her book “Parisian Chic”;). I am fairly classic in style, and have always loved polo shirts and sweaters. I actually find that they can lean kind of punky cool in certain cuts , colors etc. Think Margot Tenenbaum. Lacoste makes a slim modern fit that has 3/4 sleeves. I have one in grey and love it. Black is next!!!

Oh, those old things? She probably picked them up the last time she was in the souk in Marrakech.

I love seeing how fashion is shifting because of the pandemic. Everyone loves a collared shirt to frame their face for a video call. These picks are all great and such a nice range of styles. Earings I noticed are getting bigger play these days too since everyone has taken to video….

I don’t care what Ines is wearing…all I notice is that it looks as if she is in the tuileries in Paris. And that reminds me that I need to keep looking at options abroad so I have an escape plan if the US falls to trump.

Not buying another item of clothing until after the election.

I can attest to the excellence of her Uniqlo line! The corduroy jacket is wonderful (sizes run BIG).
