Espadrilles have always been around, but they never really interested me much until the past few years, as their design has gotten a lot more interesting and varied. For instance, check out this navy blue wedge, which is so sleek and sophisticated that you could wear it with just about anything. .
I like the subtle metallic sheen here.
And I like the less-than-subtle metallic sheen here.
These add a nice amount of height while still looking pretty walkable.
Flatforms are not for everyone and they can be on the clunky side, but the fact that these are white keeps them light.
The frayed denim and patterned sole make these a slightly funky—but not too funky—choice.
I like the crisscross strap and burnt orange hue here.
You know that for the most part, I abstain from posting items by status-y designers here, but Saint Laurent’s espadrille version of their classic Tribute sandal is just outstanding. If I thought there was even a fighting chance I could walk in them, I might go for it.
These are on the low side, but don’t come off the least bit frumpy.
I’d wear these with knee-length cutoffs.
A pair that would be at home at the beach as well as the office.
This classic slingback comes in a few colors, but I like this greenish khaki because it’s cool and also versatile.
Espadrilles always remind me of Charlie’s Angels.
Closeups of espadrilles on the accelerator!
YES! they always remind me of my mom. she wore them throughout the 70’s.
I love them…
but not the high ones. I also don’t like Farrah hair anymore.
I loved the frayed denim ones as they look so comfy. I’m not much for anything towering these days and I truly hope that doesn’t mean I’m turning into a frump!
My image of espadrilles is a photo of Picasso and one of his tres chic wives or mistresses in the 1950s. She’s wearing a full skirt and espadrilles. I’ve been collecting and wearing espadrilles non-stop since the 80s. For a long time they were the only summer footwear I could wear without socks that didn’t cause blisters. They’re totally classic, very walkable and go with everything. Flat ones are cute, but not as comfortable as a wedge. My favorite is always and forever the traditional 2 1/2″ wedge, closed toe with ankle ties, jute base and wedge dyed the same color as the rest of the shoe. Castaner makes the best ones. Sigh. Starting my day thinking about espadrilles makes me smile.
Love the espadrilles! two things to note about these summer staples – IMHO:
1. gotta be careful with the suede ones- or at least spray them with water-repellent – around here anyways – one never know when a pop up rain/thunder storm will start
2. again with the rain issues – be sure to get ones with a rubber sole all the way across the bottom. I had a favorite pair once that weren’t – and when it rained, and that jute sole got soaked – it all swelled up to strange proportions..
I swear I had the exact same red criss cross espadrilles in the 90ies. I felt pretty like one of the young geishas prancing about Kyoto in their high, wooden geta (google it, these shoes make Chinese footbinding seem like a fun option). I wore them with a maxi dress, fell badly and ripped both my knees open. A nanny helped me out and plastered my knees in bandages.
Ah, to be young and stupid in daft yet pretty shoes again.
Hahaha, no, not ever, no.
I love the espadrille look. My mom worn tons of those Andre Assous during the summer months. Right now I’ve got the beige suede, high wedge style.
Urgent request! Could you do a post on sun hats? Particularly ones for the city that won’t blow off your head, provide decent sun protection, but are still stylish!
Just finished breaking in a new pair of 2″ nude espadrilles by Pelle Moda. They literally work with everything from cropped jeans, skinny jeans, skirts, the new flared cropped pants, dresses, etc. Best summer buy!
