Back when I was at Sassy, the entire fashion department decided to go to the shows one season in customized platform Birkenstocks—the goal, I recall, was to entice Bill Cunningham to take their picture, and I believe they were successful. Now, it looks like Birkenstock is making them for real, and I have to say that I find the prospect of all of that height without pain rather enticing, if not especially dainty. Here’s a slightly lower platform in gold that I think is actually quite cute.
These have a smaller platform but I love the pattern so much I bought the Arizona and the clogs: https://www.birkenstock.com/us/arizona-birko-flor-golden-age-black/4054056688879.html?dwvar_arizona-goldenage-birkoflor-0-evaplateau-w_color=11525
Susan G – how are they to walk in? I am new to Birks but leaning in, as they say. But they sell out fast! I wasn’t prepared for that. Anyhow, walking in Birk plats, how is it?
It’s ok, but the bottoms on some are a little slick at first. I have wool clog platforms with a ton of traction so it varies. I really like the Birk/Papillio ones as they have the hard birk sole but are priced way better.
Thank you!!! So very helpful.
Anddd… I found the whole spread on Instagram.

Jill, this definitely sounds true. I will run it past my sources.
The rose gold ones though.
I have them in rose gold!! (and silver) They are indeed as comfortable as you would imagine and the compliments are endless.
Am I remembering this correctly? Sassy showed a model wearing customized platform Birkenstocks and the company (or possibly a reader, but I can’t recall clearly) wrote in to say that the platform worked against the supportive molded footbeds and that they did not approve of the customization. I am remembering this because at the time I WISHED that Birkenstock made platform sandals. I only had to wait 27 years for this come true.
Anyway, did this happen or did I dream this?
I Franced*again and bought those high Arizona’s yesterday. Coming Saturday!!
(Happy dance!)
Franced= immediately buying something you saw on GOACA and feeling super hip and stylish about it
Hilarious.
That’s a good verb. I’ll be borrowing that. (Only I slow-France bc I am not usually impulsive at shopping.)
I felt like a hobbit in these, (even though I loved them). Short legs, paddle foot.
Confused about Birk sizing. Used to be if you wore a size 5, you purchased a 35 (or 6 a 36 etc. etc.), but now they list a size 5 as a 36. Whut? And I want me some!
Omg. I remember the EXACT issue of Sassy with those platform birks and I was OBSESSED. When I read that they were custom- I was truly crushed. I think I held a grudge at Sassy for a while because they showed me something I couldn’t have.
Now I can have platform birks..
