What are you watching?

62

Right now I’m deep into the second season of Claws, a TNT dramedy executive-produced by the ever-cool Rashida Jones about the (often criminal) goings-on at a Palmetto, Florida nail salon. It is the perfect kind of trashy-but-still-smart TV that summer demands, and I will be sad when it’s over. Which leads me to my question: what are you watching and loving?

Wynona Earp…smart, funny, tough women. Excellent 1-liners; it was here that I first hear ‘amazeballs’

I am sooooo not a sci-fi person, but I LOVE Wynona Earp. You almost have to watch each show twice because there are so many great throw-away lines that you don’t get them all on the first viewing.

I think Claws is brilliant. It’s a really interesting and fun diverse show with great female character development.
I’m also catching up on the Affair and Insecure which I like for different reasons (after finishing Atlanta and Divorce).

I’ve been watching Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope on Netflix. It’s like a Dublin-based Broad City (also super fun), but with consequences. There are only a dozen or so episodes.

Yes to Claws (although I hate their streaming experience so will watch on Hulu), Can’t Cope, and Younger. Also Orange is the New Black’s newest season. And Harlots! On Hulu. Georgian England brothel, totally women led, great costumes, great acting. Also yes, to Acorn, all the seasons of Vera when you just want some comfort, as well as Doc Martin. And The Detectorists! And No Offence, the second season is up? Yay!

As for breaking one’s demographic, go to The Magicians on SyFy:).

I’m retired, I love TV, sometimes I think I should write a What To Watch blog, as a public service;).

Just finished “The Night Of…,” a terrific 8-episode series about a NYC murder mystery case, starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed. Absolutely gripping. A naive Pakistani college student has a one night stand with a woman and then is charged with her murder. I found it hard not to binge watch the entire series.

If you aren’t a member of Acorn TV it is well worth the subscription price (which is low). I just binge-watched the second season of No Offense which is brilliant (as is the first season). Also the Welsh series, Hidden, also brilliant also on Acorn. And Striking Out. All three shows have female leads.

Just finished Succession, in which none of the characters are likeable but I think that’s the point and it still works. Younger is great and major swoon over Peter Hermann!! And I’m a bit embarrassed to admit I also watch The Bold Type even tho I am way beyond their demographic!

Claws is awesome. My mom lives in Florida, and those characters aren’t too far fetched..

The Bold Type is great! No need to feel guilty. I love watching smart women deal with problems while helping each other out instead of undermining each other. Plus the clothes are awesome!

I also enjoy GLOW, Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Younger, and Bosch. And I can’t wait for Killing Eve to come out in a form I can access!

We just binged “Succession” which is sometines a comedy, sometimes a tragedy, and often both at once. It is brilliant and addictive. Have loved “Younger” from the beginning. “A Very British Scandal” on Amazon is only 3 hours and great. “Man in an Orange Shirt” ran on PBS Masterpiece and is incredibly moving. Worth seeking out. I’m waiting for all the “Sharp Objects” episodes to land so I can binge them. I thought “Killing Eve” started out really well, then went downhill. That’s a shame, because the performances are stellar.

I finally finished watching all four seasons of “Rita”, plus the spinoff “Hjordis”. I bought a plaid shirt.

Now I’m watching “Santa Clarita Diet”, and find it hilarious that they are perenially sunny realtors. I have not, however, bought a fuschia rain poncho and matching rubber gloves. I don’t realy have a use for them…yet.

Unfortunateky Netflix pulled the plug on the Scandi-noir series “The Bridge” when I was only half-way through. Curse you, NF!

Getting On – Like “Claws,” also starring Niecy Nash. So uncomfortable and so good!

Younger – Peter Hermann (>swoon<), Miriam Schor – brilliant here and on "The Americans" (which deserves its own post).

Colony – Unexpectedly not renewed, but hoping the Broussard character has a spin-off. I'm completely fascinated by him and what his backstory must have been. Tory Kittles needs to star in his own show. Thank you.

Ballers – Totally guilty pleasure! I had no idea this could be so much fun.

The Rundown with Robin Thede – Waiting for the start of the second season and… just discovered that it's been canceled. What?!?!?!?!?! BET, please reconsider.

Insecure – Waiting for the start of the third season and… confirmed that it is coming back. Whew!

Elementary – Character development is subtle and nuanced, maybe a little too slow, but it's very gratifying to see a middle-aged woman of color facing real middle-aged issues — caring for a parent with Alzheimer's, adopting a child, filing her rescue tortoise's claws, doing the work!

I just caught up on the first two seasons of “Insecure” and absolutely love that show. I think it achieves the universal in the specific, which is hard to do! I also really loved “Fleabag” and am waiting impatiently for Phoebe Waller-Bridge to do the second season — but right now it’s scheduled for 2019! Her character’s misadventures often had me laughing and heartbroken simultaneously.

Amazon has some winners. I love-love ‘Bosch,’ totally addictive. Thrilled it’s been renewed. Also, just binged watched season 2 of ‘Goliath,’ starring Billy Bob Thornton. It’s also on Amazon and it’s unbelievable. LOVE it. It’s so under the radar.

But here’s my FAVORITE…The Good Fight, with Christine Baranski on CBS All Access. If you watched and loved The Good Wife, you will love this even more! There are 2 seasons, and I’ve been watching this obsessively (as in 4am wake up) just this last week. It’s SO worth the $10 to pound through it. The cast, the writing, all outstanding. It’s female driven, featuring very diverse characters. It’s smart and addictive. Truly, if you watch nothing else, try The Good Fight.

I’m down to my last 3 episodes and I’m BUMMING HARD. Thankfully, it’s been renewed. Gotta wait a year though!

Co-sign on The Good Fight! Christine Baranski is an absolute goddess! It’s well-written, well-acted, and well-cast. It’s tackles very, very timely issues and also takes on the Trump era head-on. And the costumes, oh, the costumes! Diane Lockhart’s wardrobe is as fabulous as you remember from The Good Wife. The chunky chain necklaces and the drool-worthy blazers are back with a vengeance! And it’s not just Diane! All the characters are amazingly dressed, even the men. It’s basically workwear porn.

Dietland. Very interesting. (For the record -Vigilantism is almost always baaaaaad.) Am a little worried that the story is going too fast, but I know little of such things.
