Jenn and I are talking all things holidays today: the best gifts we’ve given and received; New Year’s resolutions (which maybe we should rebrand “intentions”) the only holiday song I like at all; letting Christmas decor, in Jenn’s words, “barf all over your house;” as well as listener comments that put a bee in our collective bonnet; toxic positivity; and so very much more. Listen in on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Not sure if other listeners ran into this, but the audio quality wasn’t great for me — kind of tinny, if that makes any sense. Perhaps my sub-par headphones. I want to be able to hear your lovely voices, “vocal fry” and all. Love a Kim and Jen episode!
Yes, agree! We’re working through some kinks with new recording software — hoping next week’s sounds better but it *might* take us a minute to get the audio right.
Great episode! I could not agree more about those toxic positivity people. I don’t know when this started, but it’s a super annoying way of making women feel guilty for their own emotions and asking them to suppress them. I also find it annoying that women can’t talk about their feelings about themselves without other women responding as though you have passed judgment on all other women. Ugh. Anyway, on another note, Comedian April Winchell who used to run Regretsy once had this awesome collection on her website of weird/hilarious/bizarre Christmas and Hanukkah songs from the 40s- present. It looks like she still has a page of bizarre songs, but she got rid of all the holiday ones for some reason. I used to make mixed CD compilations of them to give as gifts every year.
Oh, you can find most of the songs here (scroll down for the song list). Happy Birthday, Jesus by Major Bill Smith is my all-time favorite. Just click the name and the MP3 will play:

This was a great episode – I love when it is just “you guys.” That typed, I remember a conversation in the comments about the possibility of having a then-under 40 Kate Sturino as a guest. She recently posted about turning 41…..maybe you could work your magic….?
Ooooh … toxic positivity!! It sounds like a very handy term. Now I will have to listen to see if I know what it is. (I don’t often listen to podcasts bc it is just not one of my habits yet … )
Just listened, I grew up with a the knife gift superstition. Giving knives is supposed to cut a friendship. If you want to give someone knives, you can get around this by asking for penny or nickel from the person, so it’s not the gift of a knife, it’s a good deal.
Of course the other way to deal with it is to ignore it.
