Is it time for another week of requests?

I usually do the week of requests every six months or so, and it’s still a few weeks shy of that. But I thought that given our current circumstances, you might be interested in slightly different things from me, so I’m putting out the call. Please share your queries in the comments.

Can we get a post about products for neck wrinkles? I thought I was good with aging and then I started getting neck wrinkles. I find that I’m super vain about it and would like some tips on moisturizers or camouflage. I always thought I was anti-plastic surgery for myself, but now…

Yes please! My neck is a nightmare. I know that in your podcast you referenced botox and laser therapy? Elaborating on these recommendations would be so helpful.

The only plastic surgery I’ve ever considered was to have my neck tightened. Jane Fonda’s neck is ahhhhmaaaazing. Wasn’t Nora Ephrom who said the way to tell a woman’s age was by her neck…“We all look good for our age. Except for our necks.”—I Feel Bad About My Neck

How about tech/apps for doing things at home that we normally go out for? Yoga, exercise, meditation, communication, reading/library, culture, etc. Totally off the fashion & personal style thing, but maybe we need that now?

You’ve got way more work from home experience than I do, and I could use some tips…

I would love a post on how you care for your clothes. Ever since Andrea mentioned on your podcast that she washes her leather leggings, I’ve been thinking about other items that seem high maintenance but might not be. (I’d also still really love to know more about how the heck one washes leather leggings without ruining them!)

In a similar vein, any tips on organizing or finding creative storage for clothing would also be appreciated. I live in a teeny tiny apartment, and it sometimes veers towards looking like my bed is situated inside of a giant closet 🙂

Lastly, I would also love some kind of “advice to my younger self” type of post. I’m in my mid-30s and feeling a bit stuck. I take a lot of inspiration from this amazing community of women and appreciate all the wisdom they/you have to share!

Okay, I’m two weeks late on this, I know. But I thought of something last night and remembered this post. What item of clothing or accessory do you most regret letting go? I guess this can mean lost, as well, but what I really mean is something you purposefully gave away, or sold. Mine is a Liz Claiborne oversized, chunky ribbed black turtleneck sweater. Probably not cashmere, but some sort of very soft wool. Bought with my Kaufman’s credit card, for anyone reading who went to the University of Oregon in the 80s! Ha. I can’t really remember the reason for letting it go, except maybe the old “I wear this thing too much”, which is certainly no longer my m.o. More likely it was because I decided that Liz Claiborne was no longer cool enough, which is definitely something dumb 80s me would have done.

I’m finding that my regular fairly natural makeup doesn’t show up at all on Zoom, so maybe makeup that dials natural up in ways that show up in video conferencing?

(also scarves, earrings, necklaces, hair accessories–all things that show during video conferencing)

If you decide to do a “shop your own closet” piece, I can enthustiastically recommend partnering with Hallie Abrams (https://thewardrobeconsultant.com/). She is fab. Although it has been done before, I’d love an update on the “Perfect White T-Shirt that doesn’t cost a forture”. Gap V-neck has been my go-to but I long for something with a bit more stretch/fit. Thanks.

A pair of Super Pants! (To wear over Underoos, of course)

I normally work from home and also help with caring for a family member – so a combination of desk work and then standing, kneeling, squatting, and lifting. Could use pants that are durable, stay put, move like athletic pants but are not too tight (no leggings), adjust to my changing waistline (up and down a size), and have pockets!

Got these in olive and black, and they work well for warm weather:
    https://www.campsaver.com/toad-co-sunkissed-rollup-pant-womens.html

Have been searching for something in a more substantial weight for the cooler weather. Wonder Woman insignia optional.

Hi, Kim, I’ve been visiting daily and so enjoy the distraction. How about a post on “how to elevate a (fill in the blank with a classic piece)” to take the look from classic to more fashiony/stylish? I have a bunch of classic pieces and end up looking too bland. How do you make a pair of grey chinos look dynamic or playful or French girl? White shirt? Cardigan sweater? Thanks for taking our minds off the plague 🙂

In keeping with the quarantine/less-hair-washing aesthetic (if you can call it an aesthetic…) I am a huge fan of turbans for simultaneously looking retro/elegant and hiding manky hair. I often do a turban look (hair tucked in) with a large square scarf, but would LOVE a post on cool turban options- have gone down many a rabbit hole on Etsy and Ebay but have yet to pull the trigger on anything. I know it’s not a look everyone feels comfortable with- it’s easy for turbans to look dotty or strange so would appreciate your discriminating eye.

I’d also love to know what everyone is watching as an escape. I’m looking for guilty pleasures that showcase women or poc ie Insecure, Fleabag, Nora from Queens, Divorce…

Hi, Kim! I’m spending a lot of time at my home desk lately (duh!), so I’d love to see a post on 1) cute desk accessories (I’m using a mug for my pens right now) and 2) for that matter (since we’re all spending more time–all the time–at home right now) cute mugs. In terms of clothing, what I’m wearing and needing most are comfortable pants/loungey pants that nonetheless make me feel like I’m not in my pajamas with shirts that are comfortable enough to wear all day but nice enough to “Zoom” in. (Suggestions?) Finally, I can’t remember if you’ve done this already, but I’m so cognizant of spending my money not only prudently but also well: are there specific online sites that are treating their employees especially well right now, or that are giving to communities or people in need, healthcare workers, etc. in some way? (You know, it’s the Obie in me!) Thanks so much! xo

I realize this type of post is usually about shopping, but I was wondering if it would be possible to do a career post. I feel like there is so little information about career changes, navigating generational differences, people whose careers boomed in middle age. There seems so little for the middle aged/Gen X woman out there. But honestly? I think you have the best taste, so I can handle shopping too! Be safe and well!

I think sexism is basically rampant, still, and that sexist agism is probably about twice the strength of the ordinary kind. Maybe more. I have no answers, but while we look for them, we might try also increasing our support of women in business. Like when we buy stuff. Is there one of those consumer orgs that looks at percentage of female executives as a metric? It is a blunt instrument but I think we kinda need some of those. I am not a separatist – but we need to build up our own institutions.

Excuse my interrupting all over this thread! GenX here, finding myself aged out of certain paths, which is ridiculous because I am more up on tech than my 21 YO niece and her friends. I have a sneaking suspicion that not-a-fit= too expensive + 50+ YO. If I were a white bro this wouldn’t happen.

Hearing you loud & clear Kimbersam! I’m also GenX, three months into the most aggressive job search of my life, with the most skills, best network, and best ideas I’ve ever had … and there’s nothing out there. “This job is too junior for you,” is what I hear a lot, which means “You’re too expensive.” So many of my friends have gone the independent consultant route because they couldn’t find full time in house work. There’s a one-two ageism/sexism punch happening. So yes, please, on a careers post.

Best Spring 2020 clothing items and how you would style them. Love the “shop your closet” request as well. Thanks Kim.

Denim shorts? Guess I should be prefacing this request by asking if Girls of a Certain Age should be wearing them at all! I’m thinking for the beach, as part of a coverup.

I don’t think I’ll ever give up my below-the-knee cutoffs (which includes the previous year’s jeans, but also men’s regular trousers from thrift) with Vans, and I will be 60 next month. If for some reason I shouldn’t be wearing this, oh well.

I’d love to see a selection of mid weight jackets for walking the dog or being outside. Our weather in Chicago typically goes from winter to summer with no spring, but it’s been mild this year and I’m still running around in my wool winter coat. I’m making a list of all the things I’ll do or buy once the lockdown is over, hopefully in a few weeks, and this is on it.

Well, I’m not really clothes shopping, but I’d love a what are you cooking/reading/watching/doing for fun in quarantine-type post for inspiration.

Because I’m trying to wash my hair every 3-4 days, I’d love fab hat options. My favorite is a “The Future is Female” baseball cap I picked up for the Women’s March in 2016, but it’s getting way too much action!

I’m glad you mentioned your hat … I’ve been wondering what that phrase means, and I just did a quick search and on reddit, someone said it means women will have better opportunities in life in the future. And, non incidentally, that the phrase is not meant to be anti-male. … Do folks here agree with that? Bc I would love to know. I am a humanist/feminist or whatever, and I find it to be somewhat opague language. But then, some people like that.

My interpretation is that men have ruled the world til now and things are not in good shape. Let’s get the women in charge to make some significant changes.
For those of you who haven’t seen her in action, google Katie Porter on youtube. She takes old white men to task in Congress and it’s glorious.

Omg Katie Porter is simply amazing. She puts all those career politicians to shame. I’ve been watching her because she represents the district next to mine and was in an insanely tight race. She’s a law professor and a single mother to boot. For your quarantine entertainment, here’s a really interesting article about her. https://story.californiasunday.com/katie-porter-congress

Thanks – that is helpful, and also different from what I saw. I definitely agree that more women need to run for office. And use our power for good more.

More women DO need to run for office. The problem is men and women hold women to a much different (higher) standard. Or as they say, “you’ll need to be twice as good to go half as far…” Or as some also say….”BUT her EMAILS” (4 friggin years later)

I would love an article on shopping your closet and new ways to put together outfits with clothes you already own. Maybe a collaboration with Andrea L.? Thanks for all you do! This site has become my covid19 lifeline. xx

Hope it’s not too late to chime in, but just found out over a family Zoom that my engaged nephew and his new fiancee have picked the date for a March 2021 wedding in Greenpoint, Bklyn. I need some suggestions for a suitably great GOACA dress. PS Not sure if its day or evening yet, so both would be appreciated. Thanks, Kim!
