I’m always up for a good did-they-or-didn’t-they plastic surgery feature, like this one from the Daily News. And I’m always surprised to see somebody like Cindy Crawford—who can afford the best and presumably knows who to ask—with a face full of really bad botox or fillers. When you’re Cindy Crawford, you need somebody who, after a sufficient number of injections, thinks, This is Cindy Crawford’s face; I’d better not fuck it up, then puts down the needle and calls it a day.
Say it ain’t so, Cindy. Say it ain’t so.
I didn’t even recognize her.
Love your site, btw. It’s a lovely reprieve from the ubiquitous knock-kneed, bow-headed, lip-biting, twenty-something fashion bloggers who are “crushing” on everything mint (right now) and tend to wear the same freebies at the same time, “natch.” Thanks for giving us fashion-minded grown-ups something realistic, self-respecting (Jesus, can I get more hyphens in this thing?) and, well, fucking awesome.
Carry on…
What did you think of the Ashley Judd controversy, and her response to the media re: plastic surgery?

Also love your site, and was an original Sassy subscriber. Would be happy to pay to read your and Christina Kelly’s writing, but glad to see the two of you online.
I have the BEST doc (in SF), and she does a great (SUBTLE) job. But just in case, each time I remind her: “remember, I live in Berkeley”. She gets it. Cindy lives in L.A. but still, that’s no excuse.
I imagine it’s tough getting old for these ex-supermodels with hot husbands. Still, Cindy has taken it way too far. She’s looking very unfortunate.
And I also love this site. Sorry for not saying it earlier. You rock.
Holy crap! I thought that was Janice Dickinson! Bad!!!
Jen: I thought Ashley Judd’s piece was very smart, and that she was dead-on when she talked about how nasty women can be about other women. Also: she employed the word “othering” in a sentence, which was quite impressive.
But in essence, aren’t you doing the same thing to Cindy Crawford that happened to Judd? Essentially snarking on the appearance of another woman and gleefully mocking what you decided was her bad botox or filler? It’s cruel and as “girls of a certain age” I would think there would be a little more sympathy and a little less schadenfreude.
You’re probably right for calling me out on that, Acacia. But I wouldn’t call this schaudenfreude, or that I was gleefully mocking: I have actually often wondered how it is that beautiful women sometimes get such bad work done, and that overzealous dermatologists don’t know when to stop. I wouldn’t judge anyone for getting most cosmetic procedure: though I haven’t availed myself of any, I’m all for it. But I’m sorry if my tone put you off.
Ugh. Cindy is starting to look like Janice Dickinson. Why, Cindy, why???
I love the site, too. I was a faithful Sassy reader back in the day. (That was just, like, three years ago, right? I can’t be that old…)
i remember a day in the mid- to late 90’s, walking down 7th avenue and realizing that CC was walking next to me. she literally stopped traffic — both on the sidewalk and in the street.
saw her pretty up-close not too long ago and it was sad. wassup, CC? it begs two questions — why is Cindy Crawford getting ANYTHING done? she can’t be more than 46, 47. how bad could she look without work? and, yes, if she felt she needed work, why couldn’t she get, say, Brooke Shields’ (or Kelly Rutherford’s) doc? i saw her both of them recently and they looked pretty amazing. worked-on, yes, but still beautiful — and human.
Back to Kim’s comment: Yes, Ashley Judd definitely earned that M.P.A. from the Kennedy School at Harvard…amazing and inspiring to see someone in her position make the choice to go back to school to help make a difference in the world.
I too loved Sassy, and Lucky too. (I just let my subscription lapse. I no longer have any women’s mag subscriptions. They all seem kind of negative and pointless and the fashions now are fugly.)
This one post does seem a little bit mean.
On the other hand, that filler stuff wears off, right? So she will go back to looking like her lovely self again soon.
Why is everyone such a delicate little flower? If anyone writes anything approaching the truth, they are called mean.
If these ladies want to mess with their faces, they should expect that not everyone is going to love them looking like Frankenstein’s monster.
I would love to share this tip to my twin sister. She loves these beauty blogs so much that she almost believes in all of them. I just hope nothing bad would happen to her skin if she follows them.
I don’t know why Cindy Crawford did this to her beautiful face, but I suspect it emanates from the overriding “culture of fear” that seems to pervade much of the modern American ethos. We fear aging, we fear losing our partners, we fear losing our jobs and our homes…we fear change. I think we have chosen to give in to those fears and so we exchange much-needed critical thought and public expression for the media soundbite and the self-help gurus who tell us what to think. We’re losing any sense of community in America, and of that, I am fearful!
Kim France rocks. Rocks the house. Werq!!!!!!
Thanks, Ms. Charnin. I’m feeling more just a touch more fabulous knowing that you’re in the Girls of a Certain Age loop. xx
