A quick heads up

I’m off on a little vacation, guys, to a yoga retreat in Italy. This is the villa where I’ll be staying—doesn’t it look rather fantastic? I’m leaving today, and there may be a post or two in my absence, so do check in if you feel so inclined. Everything will return to business as usual on Monday the 7th. Meanwhile, I want to hear about your summer vacation—or staycation—plans. What have you got in the works?

A good friend of mine is a yoga teacher and has been hosting retreats in Italy all summer. Not sure you’re going on one of hers, but they are absolutely brilliant and so relaxing. Have a wonderful time!

We are going camping! Not my cup of tea, but the boys like it and last year I saw Prince Harry so win!

There’s a great restaurant nearby: Nona Gelsa. I had a cici soup there that is now part of my regular menu. And my husband ate a delicious pigeon!

My summer is renovating our attic into a master suite. Off to the tile stores (again) today!

That looks just lovely! And you’ll love Perugia. Enjoy!

We normally go to europe in the summer (I’m off from May to August) but this year we bought an apartment, so all my money (every last cent) is going towards that. Vacation has been spent sweating the details. It’ll be worth it, I am sure.

Have a marvelous trip. I hope it’s restorative.

This summer, I’ve been to Toronto so far, partly for hockey-writing work and partly for fun. We took a chance on a very modernist Air BnB condo in the middle of town, and it was actually perfect, even though we couldn’t initially detect which wall panel contained the refrigerator.

I also traveled to St. Paul for work and stayed at a hotel attached to the Mall of America — it was huge and surreal. I’m glad I can say I’ve seen it.

Next up is a convention in Atlanta. I love the city; I used to work at CNN, so it’ll feel like coming home.

Finishing graduate degree by mid-August, then a lot of self-care: museums, photography, yoga, reading for pleasure, and taking my rescue mutt (dachshund/terrier) for long walks around in and around Boston.
Going on a yoga retreat sounds just lovely. You will write about it, won’t you? Vacations are good for the soul.

That sounds like such a dreamy trip!

I’m working like a maniac all summer but I’m supposed go to Turks & Caicos in September. It’s for a travel story so it’s still work but definitely better than sitting at my desk!

    Have a great retreat! Italy!!

Our last houseguest leaves on Tuesday so my vacation will be never doing another load of laundry and no trips to the grocery store. Kidding aside, it’s been fun having family with us, but I’m looking forward to spending most of August going to the beach, reading and writing and having almost no schedule.

Kim I haven’t commented in years (faithful reader) but this picture was inspiring. I hope you enjoy all the beautiful retreat has to offer. My husband and I are going to Sweden with couple of days in Copenhagen, so if anyone knows any cool spots in that city would love to hear as we’ve never been. Enjoy August ladies.

    Hi Kim,
I’ll miss your posts. But have a wonderful vacation.

We’re on our second-to-last day of our annual Tahoe vacation. Exhausting but worth every second to see my boys with their cousins and extended family.

Really sick of wearing swimsuits, shorts and flip flops! I’m looking forward to wearing clothes with zippers 🙂

Headed to Charleston, NC for the Solar Eclipse in a couple of weeks. Joining several couples and families at abutting houses. Would love recommendations about what else to do in the area.

Also, for the recent Croatia visitors, I might reach out for suggestions as that is on the list for next summer.

Have a beautiful yoga retreat, Kim.

    Have a wonderful time!

Went to Hong Kong for four days and then spent 10 days in Vietnam. I had never been to Asia and I have to say I’m in love with Vietnam – the landscape, the food, and the wonderful resilient people who are so kind and funny. I cannot wait to go back (although maybe not in monsoon season).

    Buon viaggio!

I just got back on Tuesday evening from a weekend in Kansas, the hottest time of the year. It was our annual Girls Weekend, the seventeenth in a row, and we trade off whose house we’re going to kick our boys out of for a weekend (five days, really) of lounging around in our pjs, eating a lot of great food, drinking wine, and talking and laughing. It’s my favorite thing ever. There are three of us, one in KS, one in Missouri, and me, in Chicagoland, and, in addition to trading hosting duties, we also trade a Tiffany bracelet each summer. I cherish these women, these times, and it’s difficult to put into words how these 5 days out of ever year sustain the other 360.

We just returned from a family vacation along the coast of Western Europe, Portugal to Dublin. My youngest is off to college this fall so we wanted to do something big. My husband, three sons and one girlfriend took a Windstar cruise for 12 days(2extra in Lisbon) it was fantastic. I especially loved Portugal and Bordeaux area of France. My favorite stop was Saint Malo,France. Cute seaside town.
We are now thinking about our next trip, just the two of us, and it is going to be Italy.

I’m leaving later this afternoon for Lake Placid, my family’s happy place. Looking forward to some serious R&R with my husband, son, and daughter.

Then, two weeks in Miami for extended grandma time. I can’t wait to get out of town – also a NYC girl. This time of year does me in. Must escape the grind.

How lovely, hope you are enjoying your yoga retreat in beautiful Italy.

It’s been staycation mode this year since my baby was born almost five months ago. Fortunately, we have been relishing our time at our beach house. The daily 6-mile or so walks around our little town and on the boardwalk been a lifesaver for me and it’s become such a special bonding ritual with my baby girl.

A dear friend of mine just got back from an extended stay in Italy, and I think he’s dreaming of moving there permanently. He can’t say enough good things about it. I know you’ll have a great time.

Usually, my limited vacation time and money are spent on visiting family, but this year my summer trip will be a 4-day weekend by myself in Providence, RI. A friend who used to live there is always talking about how pretty it is, so I decided to check it out. I had enough points on Southwest to get my airfare for free, and I had enough points with Enterprise to get the car rental for half price, so the only major expense is my B&B. As much as I love my family, I’m looking forward to 4 days of peace and relaxation without all their drama.

I just got home yesterday from 10 days in Italy with my husband and 3 kids as well as my sister-in-law’s family of 5. My oldest will be a senior in high school next year and we wanted to go on one big trip before he is off to college. We went to Rome and a home in Umbria. It was absolutely fantastic. Our day trip to Florence was the only minor disappointment. That city is way too small for the hordes of summer visitors! But the pasta and gelato were still fantastic. I will visit Door County, Wisconsin for my mom’s 90th birthday in August (with 80 close family members) and Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday over Labor Day weekend. (I live in Chicago.) Truly a memorable summer for my family!

We rarely travel in summer because we have the flexibility to go other times (see in February, Tasmania!) but there have been a slew of weekends away to see family and/or the eclipse: NYC, Knoxville, DC, Utah; along with business in NYC, Dallas, Asheville.
