Top 5 of the week: clean beauty products I’m loving

25

I don’t do beauty posts so often because I don’t like to write about any product I haven’t tried, and I typically don’t vary my skincare and makeup routine so much. But lately I’ve been in the mood to mix things up a bit, and to dabble in a little more clean beauty than I have in the past. According to beauty editors of my acquaintance, the toughest product to make really effective and clean at the same time is mascara, and who knows why. But this Kosas formulation does a truly admirable job of volumizing, and it contains biotin, which is good for lash growth.

I have the toughest time with concealer, so usually I just skip it, but after a recent weeklong bout of insomnia played hell with my under-eye circles, I visited the horribly-named-but-really-quite-excellent Detox Market on Houston Street looking for answers. The very nice woman who helped me said her favorite concealer in the store was this stuff, which goes on super-light and does a great job of brightening things up. I’m usually awful at applying concealer, but it’s almost impossible to screw this up.

I’ve been using marula oil on my face for a while now, and it works well enough, but I’ve been wondering if another oil—one with more than one active ingredient—might be even better. So on my trip to Detox Market, I picked up this oil, which contains marula, but also avocado, hempseed, and grape seed oils, all of which are supposed to be rich, calming, and hydrating. It’s too soon to issue a formal edict on how it works, but I will say it goes on super-light and absorbs quickly.

This lipstick—the shade is called Royal—isn’t new to me, but it is my current favorite hue—berryish, but skewing more pink than brown, and it lasts even under a mask.

Bobbi Brown stopped making the BB cream/foundation I’ve been using for years, and I was bereft over this before I discovered this tinted face oil, which goes on so smooth and is sheer enough that you don’t feel like you’re wearing a face-full of makeup.

If you mis Bobbi I do really like Laura Mercier. Her tinted moisturizer and coverup are really excellent. I’ve got 55 year old skin and it doesn’t dry or cake.

My favorite face oil of all time (and I’ve tried a lot of them!) is by Prestidge Beauty (Andrea recommended it on her blog). It’s a miracle worker. The other clean beauty brand I’ve been dying for is Bobbi Brown’s “Jones Road” – I’ve tried the Miracle Balm, which I’m not thrilled with because it’s too sticky and has too little pigment. I ordered the mascara, too, but haven’t opened it yet. I miss lipstick!

Praying for younger looking skin and what do I get? Blackheads, occasional underground dwellers (cystic acne) and comdones. Guess I needed to be more specific regarding age.
Wondering how Kosas tinted oil would be for my 54 y/o skin that is combo with tendencies towards oily.

So FWIW, my teenaged son used the Kosas oil when he wanted to spiff up his skin for prom, and it blended beautifully. He had no complaints about texture. When I used it, on my dry, fussy 50 y.o. face, the oil kind of sat on top, almost as if my skin was too dry to accept it. (Not sure if that’s scientifically possible, but that’s what it felt like.) Sephora carries the Kosas oil and has generous samples, although I’m not sure if they offer them online.

Kim, I’m so jealous that you can walk over to stores like Detox Market. I used to commute to NYC every day, but now that I work from home all these stores are so far out of reach. I’ve only been in the city once since March!
I’m also curious about Bobbi Brown’s new Jones Road line.

Bereft, indeed! Thank you for suggesting a replacement for the BB Cream. I guess I’m on my last tube….

I know there are bigger things to worry about but base makeup being discontinued is the worst. I panicked earlier this year when I read that my go-to BB cream shade was being discontinued and tried to find another one but I ended up buying a few of the last stock and will kick the can down the road.

If you live near an outlet center, you might want to check out The Cosmetics Company Store, which carries all Estée Lauder-owned brands. They may still have stock of the Bobbi Brown BB Cream.

I was diagnosed with cancer this summer and threw out all of my makeup, switching to clean. I’m really liking the Ilia Limitless mascara, RMS un-concealer, and everything by Milk from the lip/cheek sticks to their liquid eyeliner to their tinted lip balm. On the drugstore front, Burt’s Bee’s lip shimmers and lipstick and the Pixie line at Target are also fab. Eye shadow is the one tricky area– not a lot of options– but the Aether palettes are gorgeous and usually on sale

I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, Trixie. Another vote for Ilia products, I have the eyeliner and it’s a cinch to apply.

I’m sorry about your diagnosis. That’s a lot to handle at any time, and especially now. The PYT Beauty No BS eyeshadow palettes is amazing. The shades are very finely ground, so they feel great going on, last for a long time, blend beautifully. Lily Lolo is good if you’re looking for something that’s not super pigmented — more of a sheer wash of color. If, on the other hand, you want a ton of pigment (and are willing to pay for it) Kjaer Weiss’s eye shadows are really good.

Thank you, I’ll check them out. It’s definitely been… interesting going through this during a pandemic, but it certainly makes you appreciate the little things. And I’m done with chemo now so everything seems brighter.

That lip color is gorgeous, just added to my Sephora cart. I work from home & I miss wearing lipstick for social occasions. The only time I ever wear it any more is for a Saturday zoom call with friends.

I’ve been using the Indie Lee squalane oil that was, I believe, recommended here, right? It’s working well for me so far in this really, really, really dry climate. That concealer is inching its way into my cart as I type––right now I’m using some Neutrogena concealer that I picked up at a CVS when I found myself totally out and didn’t have time for an order. It’s “ok.” Like you, Kim, and most of the population, I’m not sleeping well and I probably won’t until around…oh, I don’t know…maybe Jan. 20th 2021 so concealer is KEY!!!

I found that if I apply the squalane oil over damp skin like after a shower (or even rinsing my face and letting the water soak in for a minute) it helps even more. I have super dry skin so I still need a very thin layer of vaseline over the squalene but I hope you don’t need that extra step.

I’ve been using -and loving – the same squalane oil based on Kim’s earlier post. And, yes, I may end up taking January 21st off and sleeping all day (ain’t no concealer that can help with the bags I’m carting around these days)!

A beauty blogger who I follow loves that Kosas mascara. It’s one of her favorites. She compared the Kosas mascara to a new one by Bobbi Brown. Brown has a clean line that she’s started called Jones Road. I’m expecting a delivery of her mascara this week. Maybe Bobbi would be a good guest for the Everything is Fine podcast, Kim?

Curious to see what the the Jones Road mascara is like. I have been an avid user of Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara, but that has now been discontinued. Trying to find a replacement I like as much.

I have been using Jones Road for two weeks and it is AMAZING. Legit the best thing I’ve ever tried and I’ve tried everything. Huge volume and length and it’s clean. Totally worth the money. Her new balm is pretty killer two

I am a super Kosas fan girl, but I gotta say, that mascara is terrible. It was raccoon eyes all day – I kept cleaning it up only to see that it smeared again and again. Their face oil is delicious though!
