The last time I went to see the woman who does my color, she told me my hair looks to be about 50% grey at this point, and I’d been suspecting as much, because lately when my roots grow in, they grow in bold. And this would explain why I’m going through my Color Wow Root Cover Up a whole lot faster than I used to. This stuff goes on easy, covers up roots beautifully, and stays put until you shampoo it out.
Canmake Cream Cheek blush is a Japanese drugstore product I order on Amazon and it always takes forever to arrive, but the wait is worth it: it provides the subtlest-but-brightest wash of color, and is good for midday touch-ups too.
I’ve been using Bobbie Brown BB Cream for longer than just about any product here, and like that it smooths out my complexion without looking at all fake or heavy.
I’ve raved about T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial before here, but I can’t think of another product that makes my skin glow like this does. In fact, I had a fancy facial at the spa, and afterward my skin looked pretty good, but no more so than when I use this stuff.
This Klorane makeup remover comes in a handy, super-sized container, and—more importantly—is as effective as it is gentle.
After reading this post I bought the Babyfacial and IT IS AMAZING. My skin truly feels as if I had an actual in-salon facial. Thank you for the rec! I feel myself now falling down the Drunk Elephant wormhole…..
Ok guilty pleasure is the Joan Rivers cover up from QVC. In my non-professional life I’m going super short and going gray.
I am someone who is perpetually buying new products. I read a magazine article or blog post about what such-and-such model uses, and I rush to ebay and click! (At least it’s cheaper on ebay; I’ve gotten great deals.) But lately I find I’m going back to products I used to use, and loved; I just abandoned them for the next best thing.
First, Pond’s Cold Cream. Micellar water just doesn’t take mascara off that well, and I felt I was tugging too hard. Pond’s Cold Cream smells like roses (Heaven!) and does the job. You do have to rinse a bit to get it off, but it takes mascara off in a few swipes.
Second, Perricone products. Periodically I go to ebay and pick up the Neuropeptide Cream (maybe discontinued? not sure), but I invariably stop using it. But the product I really love is Sub D, which is for the neck and decolletage. I’m usually opposed to products with limited use, but this is the only moisturizer I have been able to consistently apply to my neck – and believe me, my neck needs it! And there’s something about the smell I find incredibly comforting. I love itI I also love the Neuropeptide Eye Cream and the High Potency Face LIft. I’ve been able to stick to this regime for months.
I find the sprays to tacky and I don’t like the feel. I was away once and didn’t have my WOW and I bought a Clairol root powder (in a similar compact) and I like it much better. And it doesn’t come off as much if I forget and scratch my head. Maybe it would be less matte, not sure.
My repeat purchase is Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser, which keeps my skin smooth and blemish free with its gentle exfoliants. And my heart breaks because Bobbi Brown has discontinued my holy grail product, “EXTRA Tinted Moisturizing Balm” – tint, moisture, treatment and SPF in one product. *sigh*
As another 50% grey who stop colors, I’ve been very happy with Color Wow (dark brown) and DE Baby Facial. As for foundation my current favorite is the Westman Atelier. They are pricey but on my 48yr old skin they blend seamlessly. Plus I travel for work so being a stick foundation is an added bonus.
Still not stop!
I love Drunk Elephant Baby Facial. I use it once a week or once every other week and that seems to do the trick. Really helps keep my skin looking fresh during the dregs of winter!
I have the Canmake and like it a lot but lately find myself using a Revlon lipstick for the same effect.
I’m in my early/ mid 30’s and starting to get a fair number of very noticeable grey hairs (against my otherwise dark brown hair). I would love to hear folks thoughts on dying vs. letting it go. I’ve never dyed my hair and I’m afraid of the expense and the upkeep, but I’m also not loving these starkly contrasting white hairs.
I’m 59 and have an appt for color and highlights on Monday. I go a long time between colorings because it’s so damned expensive! But I’ve seen myself in recent photos and gray is NOT my friend. Until I get sick of it, or every hair on my head turns shimmery white, I intend to keep on coloring.
You and me both! I don’t see myself halting the colouring appointments for a long time. I’m 50.
I go every for weeks. Even if I stopped, my grays would need brightening.
Yup. My roots are the ugliest iron barf shade, I didn’t get lucky in the going gray stakes Also, my hair grows really fast. I do my roots myself every 3 weeks and go for cut/highlight/fixes every 8-12 weeks. Wasn’t impressed w/ ColorWOW so I use Style Edit (found on Amazon). It has a round, blotty sponge thingie that works well. AND If I just wet my hair or lightly condition, most of it stays in until I wash w/ shampoo.
Adding to this…my daughter (she’ll soon be 38) takes after me in that she began going grey when she was 18. It’s genetic. She does color her hair, but she colors it grey rather than brown. It looks beautiful. And it doesn’t age her a bit.
I dye my hair a shade pretty close to my natural so the upkeep isn’t too bad. I go every two months but I don’t have a lot of grey. I’ve always fooled around with colour, grey or no grey!
Here’s a conversation we had on that very topic, Chris: https://www.girlsofacertainage.com/but-i-digress/covering-grey-vs-going-natural/
Thank you to you all!
I’m about 95% grey/white under this medium golden brown and I use the ColorWow and also the Oribe root spray(sparingly! you don’t get much it is $$$). My hair grows a lot so now I am at 5 weeks touch ups and even that is a pain. About 3 times a year I give serious thought to either 1) going blonde or 2) letting it go just so I don’t have this dang monthly root problem. My stylist says even if I did let go grey I’d still be coloring it to fix the tone. never a break…
Hi Kim, I’ve tried Wow Root Cover Up but have found that it’s like putting eye shadow on my hair and it makes my roots look so matte. Maybe I got a bad batch but I’m curious if any of your readers feel the same.
I feel the same way. It doesn’t cover all that well and the matte look is really obvious. Maybe we’re not using it correctly?
That’s exactly how I feel! And I wondered the same thing about getting a bad batch! My sister told me she loves it and we usually love the same products…. but I’m not impressed at this point. Gray Away work better for me.
Yes I feel the same. I went back to the color spray and find that it feels better but comes out after one brushes one’s hair
I’ve bought the Color Wow and it’s good but Clairol makes the same product for a fraction of the price and it works every bit as well. I color my naturally brunette (going gray) hair red so a root touch up product is a must. The key is to dab it on (not brush) and then use a fine-tooth comb to even it out. Avoid the scalp as much as possible. Takes a little time but it’s worth it.
The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution is the same as Drunk Elephant and way more affordable. I’ve used both and swear by The Ordinary.
Yes, the Clairol one is good–I actually like it better. I feel as though it doesn’t come off under your nails as much if you have to scratch…
I agree with you on the Bobbie Brown. It’s probably the most expensive tool in my arsenal and I’m about to buy tube #3.
I take that back. P50 is the most expensive thing on the bathroom counter and I’m not that impressed. I don’t think I’ll buy it again.
