Things I bought, things I want, beauty edition

18

I got my roots done the other day at the salon I go to in my old neighborhood, the West Village, and afterward made a pilgrimage to the place I most miss living in close proximity to: C.O. Bigelow Apothecary, a.k.a. my happy place. My reasons for loving Bigelow’s are many, and chief among them is the fact that the ladies behind the beauty counter are so helpful and un-pushy, and one of them assisted me in choosing this Lipstick Queen lip color in Berry Wine. It’s a nice, matte formulation that goes on a hair brighter than it looks like here.

I’m always on a quest to find the perfect formulation for my tragic under-eye circles, and this balm may just be it: it brightens almost immediately upon application, and does a nice job of moisturizing, and you can apply it over your makeup for a late-afternoon pick-me-up.

I usually apply two mascaras every morning: one that lengthens and one that volumizes, and I’ve been looking for that miracle product that can do both of these things at the same time. According to word on the street, this stuff is it. It’s on its way to me as I type, so I’ll let you know how it works out after I try it.

For the first time ever, Liberty of London is shipping their fantabulous beauty advent calendar to the U.S., and—while I wouldn’t ever buy it for myself—I sure do find it tempting.

We’re coming up on chapped lip season, so I’ve been looking for a good tinted lip balm, and this one from Tata Harper looks like it delivers the perfect wash of color.

I prefer a gel blush—it just blends so much easier—and am thinking I might give Glossier’s Cloud Paint in Storm a try.

This is a dry brush, and you are supposed to use it on your body before showering for softer skin, improved circulation, and a host of other purported benefits. People who use one swear by it, and I’m thinking it’s worth giving it a shot.

I’m also thinking about giving eyeshadow a try again, not for every day but for parties and other occasions when I’m looking to add a dose of drama to my look: I’m really bad at applying it, but this Eye Polish by RMS (the color is called Myth) looks pretty idiot-proof.

The cloud paint is great *except* for the applicator, it needs a needle nose, not a flat, wide “end of the paint tube” for the exit. It’s really hard to not squish out too much, or to get that perfect, “this length of squiggle is what I always use” so that your colour is the same from day to day. I much prefer Ilia’s Colour Haze, I use “before today,” which I thought was too light, but now I love, although you might prefer the colour called “sing.”

Huge RMS fan! All her makeup is easy to apply by dabbing with fingers. It doesn’t last all day, but my understanding is that’s because ingredients that help eye color stay put are not in her makeup. I haven’t had a problem with occasional re-applications

loooove lipstick queen, o ulta why did you stop carrying it. i have that sinner lipstick in bordeaux, it’s so beautiful. my new obsession though is maybelline’s made for all line. i’m asian and most red reds go berry on me, and i was at peace with orange reds being my red. but red for me is really red on me, i still love my orange red but some days a girl just wants that taylor swift lip

Here you are with a wonderful Beauty post, the day after I request one (Seriously, how do you do that?). Just a word of caution re:Glossier Cloud Paint. Storm is a gorgeous shade, but a little…VERY little…goes a long way. I bought a dry brush, but damn, that shower just beckons when I’ve only reached my ankles.

I love Wander mascara, it really makes putting on mascara effortless. Nars also makes a really nice liquid blush.

Aging gracefully in mascara and lipstick is not something I’ve managed to do. Every time I apply either I look clownish and “made up” rather than natural only enhanced. (and just forget anything as out there as eye shadow!! oy and egad)….sigh….

I use the RMS eye polish in Myth. Love it.
only complaint is that it doesn’t last all day for me

Hope I’m not out of line here, but I have to plug the artist of the Liberty of London calendar box front, @sarahmaycock, she does a lot of commercial work but I have a couple prints of hers that I love.

I love the Olio E Osso balms for just a little color and shine on my lip, cheek and eyes. (Lipstick has always been a challenge. Have always envied those who can keep color on through the day. 30 seconds after meticulously applying, it always winds up looking like a 4 year old just went to town on me)

Kim, do you like this eye product better than the Becca? Do you use both at the same time/same day?

I apply this when I apply my moisturizer, and then use the Becca when I’m putting on my makeup about 20 minutes after that.

I received the Wander mascara in an Allure beauty box, and it IS pretty great. You can feel it really grabbing and pulling your eyelashes.
    Also the glossier cloud
Also the cloud paint is super pigmented, you only need a little dot

Kim, Have you seen the BBC mini-series about Liberty of London? You can find it on YouTube, there are two seasons. It is FANTASTIC. The staff is just as quirky and delightful as you’d want them to be. Also–I have that Lipstick Queen shade. I love their products!

I just want to say how much I enjoyed seeing the giant photo of the lipstick, sort of in mythic grandeur. Some people might say these things are frivolous but I think it is good to put on a show, especially on a daily basis, if one can at all manage it. There are many affordable ways to do this. I am inexcusably remiss in this department and maybe seeeeeeing a nice picture of a lipstick will shove me in a better direction.
